Zambia's Eli
Mambwe at Beijing Games handed
bye
(Xinhua News Agency July 28,
2008)
Zambia's
badminton player Eli Mambwe has
been handed a bye from the
preliminary stage at the Beijing
Olympic Games on August 9,
according to The Post.
Badminton Zambia (BZ) general
secretary Godfrey Masuwa said in
an interview on Sunday that
Mambwe would enter the Olympic
badminton tournament in the
round of 32.
Masuwa said the draws were made
in Beijing in on Saturday.
"Eli has been handed a bye from
the round of preliminary round
and will enter the competition
in the next round of 32," Masuwa
said.Masuwa said in the round of
32, Mambwe will face winner of
the preliminary stage draw
between Stuart Gomez of
Australia and Irwin Kelhossner
of France.
He said should Mambwe progress
to the next stage, he will be up
against world fourth seed Chen
Jin of China.
Masuwa said BZ was excited about
Zambia fielding its first-ever
badminton Olympian since the
association was formed in 1948.
He said the development shows
the great strides that the game
has made in the 60 years of the
association's existence in
Zambia.
"Overall we are excited about
seeing Eli being the first
Zambian badminton player to
qualify to the Olympic Games,"
he said.
"We hope he can go on and became
the first Zambia to win an
Olympic medal in badminton.
"At the Athens Olympics, Africa
had just one place reserved for
the continent, but this year
wehave three places for the men
and four for women. This shows
the great strides things have
changed with the Beijing
Olympics."
Mambwe won silver at the 2007
All-Africa Games held in Algeria
last July.
And BZ has postponed the Top-16
tournament set for Central
Sports Club in Lusaka this past
weekend to help Mambwe prepare
for his Olympic outing.
Masuwa said the Top-16 has been
postponed due to renovations
being carried out at the club
and the event would now be held
on August 16.
Eli Mambwe fails to reach
Olympics, places hope on
tripartite
By Sports Reporter Times of
Zambia 19/06/2008
ZAMBIA badminton star, Eli Mambwe, has failed to qualify
for this year’s Beijing Olympic Games to be staged in
China after a series of qualifiers held across the
world.
Instead, the Germany-based Mambwe, a silver medalist
from the African Championships, would be hoping that a
National Olympics Committee (NOC) application for him to
go to China under the tripartite system (wild-card
entry) works out.
Both the NOC and Badminton Zambia (BZ) confirmed that
Mambwe had missed out the straight qualification to the
Olympics, but insisted that it was marginal.
Mambwe’s failure means Zambia will only be sending six
athletes to Beijing with just one judoka, Shapa
Wakunguma, on the waiting list.
NOC secretary, Hezel Kennedy, Saïd Mambwe had failed to
make it straight to Beijing after marginally failing to
attain the points required for one to be part of the
world’s best sporting competition.
“No, Eli (Mambwe) has not made it, but he can still go
under the new system called the tripartite. We have
applied and now we are waiting for a response. For now,
he continues training under the International Olympics
Committee (IOC) scholarship,” she said.
The tripartite is a new system introduced by the
organisers of Beijing Olympics to allow athletes from
small countries take part in the Games after failing to
qualify.
According to Kennedy, names of athletes who marginally
failed to make the Olympics would be given a chance
depending on their ability to challenge for medals by
the tripartite committee.
Kennedy said the initial cut point was well over 100,
but after being brought to a two-digit number, Mambwe
just missed out and is third in Africa, a position that
could most certainly see him through.
BZ president, Godfrey Masuwa, also regretted Mambwe’s
failure but quickly shifted his hope on the tripartite
in which he expressed confidence it would favour the
player.
“We would have of
course wanted him to qualify, but we can now just pray
that the tripartite works out. He has worked hard for
this and his game has improved. It’s only fair that he
is given a place,” Masuwa said.
He said Mambwe’s biggest problem was financial
constraints to compete in all qualifiers, which would
have improved his chances of qualifying to the Olympics.
He said that Mambwe did not compete in all the required
qualifiers but still gained points that almost saw him
through before he lost out to an Algerian player.
Masuwa said BZ still remained focused and was looking at
the 2012 Olympic Games where more Zambian players should
qualify straight having leant a lot from Mambwe’s
experience and the IOC scholarships.
And the NOC has said it was still waiting for official
communication from the Zambia Judo Association and
Wakunguma himself over the athlete’s performance in the
qualifiers.
Kennedy said that the Judoka had not officially informed
his committee whether he had managed to travel to South
Africa where his last hope of making the Beijing
Olympics lay.

Elie Mambwe
(Zambia) Nigeria International 2008, April
FOUR BADMINTON
PLAYERS TO REPRESENT ZAMBIA
Four badminton players
have been selected to represent Zambia at the Thomas
badminton tournament to be held in Mauritius. This
tournament is billed for the weekend.

Eli Mambwe who is
Africa’s second best badminton player and his coach says
the preparations for the tournament are running smoothly.
Last year Elli said that
he was going to stop representing Zambia at badminton
tournaments because he was not receiving any support
from government. And Elli has maintained that if the
situation doesn’t change he will have no option but to
stop playing.

Apart
from that problem Elli and his friends still have
problems with the infrastructure were they play
badminton from.
The hall has no
ventilation and it is covered with card boxes. This same
hall will be used to host the all African games in 2011
and its state leaves much to be desired.

BZ
shows interest in building training centre
By
Kalumiana Kalumiana The Post ZambiaTuesday
August 28, 2007
BADMINTON
Zambia (BZ) has expressed interest in building a regional
training centre at the Olympic Sports for Hope Project (OSHP)
site next to the Independence stadium in Lusaka.
BZ general secretary Godfrey Masuwa said yesterday that his body
was lobbying the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to consider
Zambia as a location for a regional training centre at the OSHP.
"I have been tasked by Badminton Africa to find an ideal site
where to build a regional training centre," Masuwa said.
"And BZ is very excited about the opportunity given to us by the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) through the OSHP of
setting up a badminton training centre here (Lusaka).
"I have written to BWF president Punch Gunalan expressing BZ's
interest in setting up a regional training centre for Africa
here in Zambia."
Masuwa said BWF had three training centres world-wide in
Germany, Bulgaria and China adding that one in Africa would be
ideal for players from the continent.
He added that BZ felt confident the BWF would consider the
application for locating a regional training centre, thanks to
Zambia's current ranking in Africa.
"Zambia is currently ranked third in Africa and that's no mean
achievement. So we are confident that BWF will consider our
application," said Masuwa.
Should the BZ's proposal be successful, they will be the second
local federation who will have a regional training centre at the
OSHP site to be built at the centre.
Boxing is the other sport and will have a regional boxing
training centre that will be funded and run by the International
Amateur Boxing Federation.

Mambwe faces lengthy lay-off
By Kalumiana Kalumiana Thursday August

The Post Zambia
ALL-Africa Games badminton silver
medallist Eli Mambwe faces a lengthy lay-off due to injury.
This follows the recurrence of an injury Mambwe sustained on his right
elbow at the All-Africa Badminton Championships men's singles final in
Mauritius on May 27.
"I don't know when I will be back in action because I have an injury on
my right elbow that I sustained in Mauritius and it recurred in Algeria,"
he said yesterday.
Mambwe arrived home last Friday for a two-week break from Germany where
he is on a two-year badminton scholarship, courtesy of the National
Olympic Committee of Zambia.
"My trainer in Germany didn't want me to take part in the All-Africa
Games because of the same injury but I just decided to go to Algeria,"
he said.
Mambwe added that he would only know how long he would be out of action
after undergoing a medical check-up when he returns to his base after
August 10.
Meanwhile, Mambwe said he was not pleased with finishing runner-up in
the men's final to his arch-rival Nabil Lasmari of Algeria at the
Algiers Games.
Mambwe also won bronze in the mixed doubles with Olga Siamapangila.
Lasmari's win over Mambwe at the All-Africa Games was the Algerian's
third successive victory over his Zambian opponent in the last nine
months.
"I was aiming for gold and am disappointed I got a silver but I am happy
I am going to the Olympic Games because it is a dream come true for me
to go there," he said.
And Mambwe also said he would only take part in one Badminton Africa
circuit tournament in the coming months.
He said he will only take part in the South African Open in November and
miss the Uganda Open in September.
"I will only be taking part in the South African Open in November
because my programme for now is not certain," said Mambwe.
Mambwe tomorrow heads to Kitwe where he will undertake coaching sessions
with the Zambia junior team holding a weekly training camp at CEC
Badminton Courts.
The junior team is holding weekly training camps in Kitwe ahead of their
participation in the Eighth All-Africa Junior Championships in Gaborone,
Botswana from August 20-26.

Mambwe bags silver medal From FELIX MALUNGA in Algiers, Friday
../07/2007Times of Zambia
ZAMBIA yesterday struck its first silver medal at
the ongoing All-Africa Games through badminton ace Eli Mambwe, on the day the
country’s medal tally moved to five.
Judoka Wakunguma Shapa was the first Zambian athlete to get bronze before
swimmer Ellen Hight added the second.
As Mambwe was winning his first-ever medal from the Pan-African Games, light-welterweight
boxer, Hastings Bwalya also got a silver medal assurance after pounding his way
to tomorrow’s finals.
Other medals yesterday came through flyweight boxer Kennedy Kanyanta, who got a
bronze after losing in the semi-finals and Mambwe, sealing another medal but
this time a bronze with his partner, Ogar Siamupangila in the badminton mixed
doubles.
In the badminton singles, Mambwe lost in the tough finals to Algerian Nabil
Lasmari, who got gold after winning 2-0.
In the first set, Mambwe, who beat Ugandan Edwin Ekrin 2-0 in the semi-finals,
put up a good fight but Lasmari narrowly beat him 21-18. Lasmari was more
dominant in the second set, winning 21-15.
Mambwe, however, was not impressed with his performance saying: “I was aiming
for gold not silver.
I’ve had silver twice at the All-Africa Senior chapionships.”
He attributed his loss to an injury in his elbow but promised to better his
performance in future.
Mambwe, who lost the quarter-finals in Nigeria four years ago, is ranked second
in Africa.
In mixed doubles, Mambwe and Siamupangila got bronze after crashing out in the
semi-finals to the Nigerian pair of Greg Okuonghae and Grace Daniel.
At OMS Hall in Bord El Kiffan, Bwalya again showed his class as he swept aside
Egyptian Araby Salah in the semi-finals to put himself on path for gold.
Using his power and skills, Bwalya dominated the Egyptian in all four rounds to
score a final result of 27-7.
To fight for gold, Bwalya will be meeting Herbert Nkabiti of Botswana in
tomorrow’s final.
But ladyluck was not on Kanyanta’s side last night as the 2002 Commonwealth
Games gold medalist got eliminated in the semi-finals by South African Jackson
Chauke.
Kanyanta suffered a 9-23 loss to Chauke, the result coach Wisdom Mudenda
disputed saying the Mufulira boxer was robbed of victory.
On Bwalya’s performance, Mudenda said he was now sure the Tunisia-based pugilist
would get Zambia a first gold after 16 years.
Despite injuring his right thumb, Bwalya is still confident of beating the
taller Nkabiti.
“It’s my time to win gold. My opponent is taller than me but I will ensure I cut
him down to size. I’m an African champion and I have to defend my title,” he
said.
While Bwalya and Kanyanta are bringing medals home, light-flyweight Tresford
Kaziwa, bantamweight Evans Chungu, welterweight Alick Mukelabai and
featherweight Otis Bwalya will be heading back empty-handed after suffering
early eliminations .
Badminton body happy with All-Africa Games performance
By Kalumiana Kalumiana and Namatama Mundia
Wednesday July 25, 2007 The Post Zambia
BADMINTON Zambia (BZ) has said the
two medals won by Eli Mambwe and Olga Siamapangila at the just-ended All-Africa
Games are a sign that development programme is bearing fruit.
And the Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ)
has said the players who took part at the just-ended All Africa Games have
potential to become Grand Masters.Mambwe won a silver medal in the men's
singles and collected a bronze in the mixed doubles with Siamapangila.
BZ chairman Geoffrey Chawinga said yesterday that the his association was
delighted with the medals because they were won after a lot of work and
investment into developmental programmes.
"BZ is elated and very happy with the results from Algeria," Chawinga said.
"The medals are a sign that the results of our player development is baring
fruit. The training programmes we have for Eli in Germany and Olga in Sofia,
Bulgaria."
Chawinga said Mambwe and Siampangila had not only brought honour to BZ but
to the nation as a whole.
"The results from Algeria also show that there is consistency with our
players from the Mauritius International and All-Africa Badminton
championships and that the exposure helped when we later went to Algeria,"
he said.
Chawinga went on to say that BZ would not seat on its All-Africa Games
laurels and will immediately start planning for forthcoming continental
tournaments.
He revealed that BZ's international fixtures committee will meet next week
to plan the participation of the junior and senior teams for international
events in the coming months.
Meanwhile, CFZ national coordinator Norias Kalinga said yesterday that the
players put up a spirited performance which showed that they can be Grand
Masters.
"We are very impressed with the performance of our players because it is
better than the All-Africa Games that were held in Abuja in 2003 were they
got three bronze medals," he said.
Kalinga appealed to the business community to sponsor chess since the
players had demonstrated their ability.
"The corporate world should really consider sponsoring chess because there
is potential to yield good results," he said.
Chess team reaped five medals, one silver, and four bronze at the just ended
All-Africa Games.

Mambwe’s African Zone Six
champBy Sports Reporter
September 28, 2005 - October 06, 2005 Times of Zambia
ZAMBIA’S badminton ace Eli Mambwe has been
crowned African Zone Six champion after winning the men’s individual
category at the just-ended championship in Gaborone, Botswana.
While Mambwe got the men singles’ gold medal, Zambia
minted silver in the team event after losing to defending champions South
Africa in the finals.
Mambwe fought back from a set down to beat South
African Vilgone Liane 14-17, 15-11, 15-14 and win the title.
The Zambian champion needed one hour and 10 minutes to
break the South African player in the finals.
But Zambia’s budding starlet Olga Siamupangila failed
to crack Shannel Dupresis of South Africa in the women’s finals as she
tumbled 2-1 to settle for a silver medal.
Siamupangila lost the first set 10-13 but managed to
win the second 11-8 before crashing out in the third set 3-11.
Mambwe’s older brother Lucio lost the quarter-finals
while veteran Mubanga Kaite gave up in the semi-finals and Zambia’s other
women top seed Jean Mabiza suffered a pulled muscle during the team event
against South Africa.
In the team event, Zambia lost 3-2 in the finals to
allow defending champions South Africa to retain the title they won in 1999.
To reach the finals, Zambia beat their hapless hosts
Botswana 4-1 to set a nail-biting final encounter against South Africa.
Zambia Badminton Association (ZBA) general secretary
Godfrey Masuwa, who was team leader in Botswana, said the squad played well
as the tournament had given the players good preparations for next year’s
Melbourne Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Masuwa said the event gauged the players’ strength as
they were stretched to their limits and also gave them an insight of the
kind of training they needed for an international competition.
He thanked Guardall and Night Hawk Security companies for
their support to the team.

TWO more countries - Nigeria and Mauritius - arrived yesterday to compete in
the Under-19 All-Africa junior badminton championships set for Lusaka.
The first batch of Nigerians arrived soon after Mauritius, bringing the
total number of countries already in Lusaka for the fifth edititon of the
continental championships scheduled for August 20 to 26 at the National
Sports Development Centre (Nasdec) to seven.
A check at the National Assembly Motel revealed that players from South
Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, Botswana, Mauritius, Algeria, hosts Zambia and the
first batch of Nigerians - four players and three officials had already
arrived.
Nigerian coach George Shitta said they had to come in two batches because of
problems with flight connections from Nigeria to South Africa which were
fully booked.
Shitta said the rest of the eight players and one official were expected
later.
Shitta was optimistic that Nigeria would scoop the tournament because most
of the players in his camp were internationally exposed.
“By the grace of God we will win the tournament because most of our players
are exposed. We hope to enjoy the tournament especially going by the number
of countries participating. The hospitality of the Zambian people is also
good,” Shitta said.
And in the Zambian camp, top player Elie Mambwe said he expected to put up a
good performance because he had been exposed to many international outings
