No badminton coach for SD         By Winile Mavuso     Swazi Observer 31/08/2007

BADMINTON Swaziland have once again failed in their move to hire a full time coach.
The association had run to the African Badminton Federation (ABF) for assistance to hire a coach on a full time basis. This followed that the Swaziland National Sports Council (SNSC) was not in a position to help them hire a full time coach.
In an informal discussion with Council’s Darius Dhlomo, it appeared that Council could only help the association have a coach for a short contract, contrary to the full time.
That is when the association decided to approach their mother body for assistance. This was during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Botswana last week Thursday.
However, their move did not yield any fruits because their request did not get a positive response.
Badminton Swaziland President said, “The ABF also told us that it was the responsibility of council to hire coaches for the associations. However, the Zone six said they could time and again send some coaches to the country”.
Dlamini said like in all the other countries, the ABF said they did not hire coaches for associations but rather, the councils in each country. The Zone Six only pledged to send a coach from the regional countries whenever needed.
The President said the present situation was contributing to the bad results at international level. “There is a great need for a full time coach if our players are to perform well.
The players need someone to guide them during training, even if they could go for training but if there is nobody there to guide them, they will not improve,” he said.

Badminton SD lose chance to host championships  By Winile Mavuso     Swazi Observer 30/08/2007

BADMINTON Swaziland has once again lost a chance to host next year’s Under 15s Zone Six Championships. Badminton Swaziland President Phumlani Dlamini said this was decided during the African Badminton Federation (ABF) Annual General Meeting which was held in Botswana last week.
“We failed to host the championships even this year and we were given the chance again but we are still not in a position because we don’t have the facilities, we eventually forfeited the championships to South Africa,” he said. Dlamini said the issue of facilities was a major problem for them to host.
“We don’t have adequate facilities and that is why even our players lose when playing international tournaments because they don’t get good training like in other countries,” he said.
Dlamini said the floor was slippery at the Bosco Skills Centre, which they normally use for training.
He added taht the centre had lights which makes it difficult for them to see the ball when it is against the light.
Badminton Development Coach Nick Malaza said even the Sports Centre which is currently under construction at the Mavuso Trade Centre was not going to solve their problem.
“The height is not the appropriate one for our sport. The hall also has pillars, which is going to be a problem.
Constructing
"I think government before constructing such facilities, should consult with the Sports Council which will have consulted with the associations and submit their dimensions to the government.
The children are faced with a problem when playing outside the country because they find that their opponents will shoot the ball nine metres when they are used to four metres,” he said.
Dlamini (President) said it was so surprising to hear Members of Parliament complaining about results of some sports disciplines when they actually are the ones who approve the allocation to the National Sports Council.
“The money given to Council is not enough to develop sports in the country. Some countries, like Botswana, have a Sports Ministry with a huge allocation, which is why they always win international tournaments.
"Upon performing well, the players even secure sponsorships for themselves and then the burden becomes less for government,” he said.

Badminton SD selects final team to represent country Swaziland Observer 14/08/2007

BADMINTON Swaziland has selected the final team to represent the country in All Africa Junior Championships to be held in Botswana.
The championships will kick-start on Sunday and the team is expected to leave on Saturday.
Badminton Development Coach and team manager Musawenkhosi Mnisi said a team of eight players were selected during training held at MDS on Saturday. “We had 12 players to choose from and eight of them impressed,” he said.
Mnisi said the selection started during the regional championships, where Hhohho played Lubombo and Shiselweni played Manzini. “From there we proceeded to the national schools championships and at the end we had 12 players to the choose from."
He said the players were also given a chance to gauge their performance against the seniors during a seniors tournament held at Correctional Services two weeks ago.
The players were given a fair chance to prove themselves amongst each other,” he said.
Mnisi said they used a round robing method to select the players where all the players had a chance to play against each other. “We used the points accumulated from each of the matches to select the final team,” he said.
The team consists of four girls and four boys. Two of the girls are from Ntfonjeni High School and the other two are from Mhlatane. The boys team consists of three players from Ntfonjeni and one from St Mary’s. Mnisi said the team would go for full-time camp tomorrow.
“The team would have long started camp but the problem was the ongoing schools exams because these are school going children. We will use Caritas Centre in Manzini as our camp site, and will train at the Bosco Skills Centre,” he said.
The team will only have three days of full time camp since they are scheduled to leave on Saturday by road.
The games start on the 19th and will finish on the 26th.
The team will be lead by Badminton Swaziland President Phumlani Dlamini and Ntfonjeni High School Badminton team coach will be Head Coach. They are expected back home on the 27th.
The team:  Boys Name School : Banele Mazibuko St Mary’s, Makhosini Mamba Ntfonjeni, Sifiso Dlamini Ntfonjeni, Stanley Ndzinisa Ntfonjeni

Suspend Alliance - former Badminton President    Swazi Observer (Thursday, October 26, 2006) By Nathi Zubuko

FORMER Swaziland National Badminton Association President Simon Maseko has recommended that the National Sports Council and Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association Alliance be suspended with immediate effect.
In his submissions before the Senate Select Committee probing the Alliance, Maseko said there must be a forensic audit of the Alliance funds.
He said for the forensic audit to take place, the Alliance should be suspended in order to avoid violating the Olympic charter and a new Board should be put in place.
He stated that badminton had submitted a number of concerns about the 2003/4 financial statements.
He said the 2003 badminton audited statement shows a grant of E33 000 from Council but the Council’s statement shows a grant of E47 000. “The balances are not the same when in actual fact they should be.
In the 2004, badminton’s statement shows a grant of E75 000 from Council but the Council’s statement indicates a grant of E80 000. The budget shows a grant of E61 500. The balance is still not the same. The correct grant and expenditure for the association was E61 500 in 2004,” he said.
Maseko stated that the 2004 Council’s statement shows an advance of E10 800 from Council.
“Badminton did not request such an advance, neither do we have in our possession documents to prove that badminton did make such a request nor have supporting documents of the expenditure from Council,” he said.
He added that the E75 000 (mentioned above) was given to auditors by Council but their auditors were not informed about the advance and were also not provided with supporting documents for the expenditure of E10 800. Maseko said the figures in the badminton audited statements did not tally with those of Council.
“May be other associations are also implicated in the same way as badminton, who knows,” he said.
In conclusion, Maseko said the Badminton Association had taken a decision neither to pass nor reject the Council’s financial statements for the year 2004 until a meeting billed for next week between Badminton and Council was held.
Maseko also recommended that the chairman should be elected to make it easy to evaluate him and make him accountable to associations if found guilty.
He added that the current treasurer and chairman should be fired and a new board be put in place.
