Erreur .... Oubli ..... Bug !  L'Afrique n'est toujours pas présente sur la page WBF (Thomas & Uber Cup)... Et pourtant la phase qualificative de la Zone Afrique a bien eu lieu à Maurice du 18 au 21 Février 2008 et ce sont le Nigeria (Thomas Cup) et l'Afrique du Sud (Uber Cup) qui représenteront ce Continent à Jakarta (Indonésie) en mai prochain....

Le site de la BCA ne donne toujours aucune information !!!

Quant au site internet de la B.C.A. (Badminton Confederation of Africa) .... Il est en "panne" depuis le 26 février 2008. Inutile de s'y rendre pour trouver une quelconque information de ce qui se passe en Afrique alors même que depuis le début 2008 se sont tenus : l'Open d'Ouganda, les qualifications Thomas & Uber Cup, l'Open de Maurice, l'Open du Kenya et que dans moins d'un mois auront lieu l'Open du Nigeria et aussi le All Africa ... et que dire aussi de la prochaine participation des joueuses et joueurs de badminton Africains qui seront en août prochain aux Jeux Olympiques à Pékin !!
Difficile d'accepter que le badminton, sport Olympique au demeurant, soit si mal mis en valeur par les plus hautes instances qui ont la charge de le promouvoir.
Souhaitons que cette interpellation ne restera pas lettre morte et que les responsables viendront rapidement corriger ce manque d'informations.

Poor support for badminton in Kenya / Faible participation à l'Open du Kenya

Anand CHETAN (Inde) en simple homme et Ana MOURA(Potugal) en simple dame, remportent l'Open du Kenya qui s'est tenu à Nairobi du 28 au 30 mars 2008.
Initialement prévu fin janvier 2008, l'Open du Kenya avait du être décalé mi mars à cause d'une situation politique très préoccupante, puis de nouveau décalé fin mars pour des raisons de fêtes religieuses.
Dans le contexte actuel de la course pour les points en vue des places qualificatives pour les prochains J.O. de Pékin, beaucoup ont donc préféré s'inscrire dans d'autres tournois internationaux qui offraient une certitude de date et une garantie de sécurité.
L'Afrique, à l'image du reste du monde n'a pas véritablement répondu favorablement puisque seuls l'Ouganda, le Nigéria les Seychelles et Maurice ont envoyé de faibles délégations.
Pour les pays hors Afrique, on a pu enregistrer la présence de l'Iran (Ali SHAHHOSSEINI & Kaveh MEHRABI), du Portugal (Ricardo FERNANDES & Ana MOURA), de l'Espagne (Jose Antonio CRESPO & Yoana MARTINEZ), de l'Inde (Chetan ANAND) et du Danemark (Bo RAFN).
Dans le Simple Homme, les Ougandais Edwin EKIRING (récent vainqueur du Mauritius Open) et Turkiire WILSONont atteint le stade des demi-finales. Dans le Simple Dame, Karen FOO-KUNE (Maurice) et Grace DANIEL(Nigeria), récente vainqueur également du Mauritius Open, ont également atteint les demi-finales.
Le Double Hommes a été remporté par la paire Georgie CUPIDON et Steve MALCOUZANE (seychelles), le Double Dames a été remporté par le duo Michelle EDWARDS et Chantal BOTTS (Afrique du Sud) et le Double Mixte a été remporté par la paire Greg Orobosa OKUONGHAE et Grace DANIEL(Nigeria).

Jusqu'à ce jour, tout laissait à croire que le All Africa Championships 2008 se tiendrait bien à Abuja (Nigeria) du 21 au 27 avril 2008. L'annonce "officielle" apparaissait du reste sur le Calendrier de la W.B.F. ainsi que sur le site de la B.C.A. (voir photo).
Seule une information vue sur le site de la Fédération Afrique du Sud en novembre 2007 avait indiqué "All Africa Championships 2008 was cancelled" ...
Cette annulation du All Africa 2008 est une quasi certitude car aucune information quant à son organisation n'est parvenue aux fédérations d'Afrique. La question qui se pose donc est "Pourquoi la WBF et la BCA ont-elles maintenues cet évènement dans les calendriers officiels ?".
Pour l'année 2008, nous retiendrons donc les grands évènements suivants : L'Open d'Ouganda (Janvier), l'Open de Maurice et les qualifications pour la Thomas & Uber Cup zone Afrique (février), l'Open du Kénya (avril), l'Open du Nigeria (avril), un autre Open au Nigeria (annoncé pour juillet), le Championnat des U-15 en Egypte (novembre) et enfin l'Open d'Afrique du Sud (décembre).
A ce rythme, comment les joueurs peuvent-ils obtenir classements et points dans la W.B.F. ?  A ce jour, seuls sept hommes et cinq femmes se retrouvent dans le top 200 mondial WBF, et encore il convient de prendre en considération que certains d'entre-eux évoluent dans des clubs en Europe ainsi que certains aussi sont en stage en Allemagne au centre WBF de Sarrebrucken.
Le All Africa Championships est l'unique compétition qui permette de situer les nations du badminton africain entre-elles à l'instar de toutes les autres compétitions du même genre qui ont lieu sur les autres continents. Aujourd'hui, l'afrique se trouve privée d'un Champion 2008 et les Seychelles nation détentrice du titre 2007 n'est pas prête de le remettre en jeu au grand dame des autres pays africains qui pensaient à juste titre venir le conquérir.
L'Afrique deviendrait-elle la cinquième roue du carrosse ....     A suivre ....

Reigning two-time Sportsman of the Year Cupidon and Malcouzane won their first match 2-0 (21-5, 21-12) against the Kenyan pair of Taha and Mwangi before going on to beat another Kenyan team of S Odundo and Kinyua 2-0 (21-18, 21-12) in the quarterfinal.
In the semifinal, they beat the Ugandan duo of Ebayo and Mihigo 2-0 (21-6, 21-13) to meet H Patel and P Ruto of Kenya in the final, which they won 2-0 (21-11, 21-19).
It is worth noting that Cupidon and Malcouzane were the men’s doubles bronze medallists at the Ninth African Senior Badminton Championship in Algiers, Algeria, in 2006. They also made the final of the 10th contest in Mauritius last year but settled for the silver medal as they lost the final 0-2 (17-21 and 16-21) against the Dednam brothers – Chris and Roelof – of South Africa.
Indian Anand Chetan won the men’s singles gold medal by beating Spaniard A Crespo 2-0 (21-14, 21-7) in the final. The ladies’ singles title went to Portuguese A Moura with her 2-1 (19-21, 21-14, 21-19) final win against Spaniard Y Martinez.
The South African pair of Chantal Botts and Edwards triumphed 2-0 (21-14, 21-8) in the ladies’ doubles final, while the mixed doubles title was won by Nigerians Grace Daniel and G Okuonghae with a 2-0 (21-8, 21-17) score.

Il est un fait, en badminton ou plutôt au sein de l’Association mauricienne de badminton, en l’absence de résultats pour une période de six mois c’est le ou les coaches qui payent les frais. Et dimanche dernier c’est le tandem Stéphane Beeharry et Vishal Sawaram qui a été victime d’une décision de l’AMB, au cours de son Assemblée Générale annuelle.
Et devinez qui a été sollicité pour les remplacer ? Annirao Dajee, lui-même, remercié par l’AMB en août dernier pour absence de résultats aux Championnats d’Afrique 2007 et aux Jeux Africains l’année dernière.
Ne vous en faites pas ! Dans six mois ou tout juste après les Jeux Olympiques, il y aura un nouveau bouleversement dans cette valse des entraîneurs !

Badminton - Assemblée générale annuelle  Annirao Dajee back to business ! Le Mauricien Week-End 06/04/2008

Annirao Dajee est, de nouveau, entraîneur national de badminton. La réintégration de Dajee a été votée lors de l'assemblée générale annuelle de l'Association mauricienne de Badminton (AMB), dimanche dernier. 8 membres ont voté et 6 contre. Le moins que l'on puisse dire c'est qu'il existe un mal-être profond au sein de cette discipline. Stephan Beeharry et Vishal Sawaram pourraient agir comme assistants d'Annirao Dajee.
Les membres présents à l'AG dimanche dernier étaient Ravin Sandrasagren, le président de l'AMB, Poorrananenden Sungeelee, Aktar Gohobur, Mahadeven Yagambrum, Veerapen, Soudesh Dauharry, Annirao Dajee, Abhinesh Dussain, Sanjay Goboodhun, Diraj Gooneadry, Roop Gopaul, Basir Mungroo, Rajen Pultoo, Soopayah Veerasamy, Dev Heerasing et Milazar (Rodrigues). Soudesh Dauharry et Milazar n'ont toutefois pas participé au vote.
" Beaucoup de parents qui sont venus me voir pour me demander de revenir à la tête de la sélection nationale. Cette fois, j'ai le soutien de l'assemblée. Je tiens d'ailleurs à remercier ceux qui ont voté pour moi d'avoir placé sa confiance en moi. Comme je l'ai dit dimanche dernier, je me donnerais corps et âme afin d'accomplir ma tâche ", a souligné Annirao Dajee.
Ce dernier a signifié son intention de travailler avec le tandem Stephan Beeharry-Vishal Sawaram. " Comme ils étaient déjà là, je pense que ce serait bien de travailler avec eux. J'espère que chacun mettra ses rancœurs de côté et qu'il n'y aura plus de conflits pour le bien de la discipline. " Les points avancés par les membres de l'assemblée pour le retour d'Annirao Dajee à la tête de la sélection nationale sont qu'en août 2007, ce dernier avait ramené des résultats avec l'équipe junior. L'Assemblée s'est aussi demandée comment des joueurs peuvent être des entraîneurs et s'évaluer eux-mêmes.
Poorrananenden Sungeelee avait d'abord proposé que l'AMB institue un select committee afin de débattre sur la question. Mais la majorité de l'assemblée a refusé cette proposition. C'est ainsi que l'on a procédé au vote. Il est bon de rappeler que le 4 septembre dernier, le président et les membres de l'AMB avaient officialisé la nomination des deux nouveaux coaches après le non-renouvellement le contrat d'Annirao Dajee. Beaucoup a été dit après cette nomination. Le retour d'Annirao Dajee a déjà commencé à irriter certains. À commencer par les deux entraîneurs. Selon les informations, certains joueurs ne sont pas favorables au retour d'Annirao Dajee à la tête de l'élite nationale. Plusieurs autres items ont été évoqués tels que les stages de Brevet d'État de Cadres Sportifs (BECS) ou encore les finances de la fédération. L'issue de l'Assemblée générale est venue, une nouvelle fois, démontrer que la discipline va mal et qu'il est grand temps qu'il y ait du changement à la tête de cette fédération.

Annoncé à Abuja (Nigeria) du 17 au 21 avril 2008, le All Africa Championships a été annulé. Le continent Africain sera donc le seul à ne pas organiser son Championnat continental en 2008.
Pour les autres continents : Oceania Championships 2008 (12-20 février à Nouméa Nouvelle Calédonie) - European Championships 2008 (GP Gold, 12-20 avril à Herning Danemark) - Asia Championships 2008 (GP Gold, 15-20 avril à Jahor Bahru Malaisie) - Pan-Am Championships 2008 (10-05 octobre à Lima Pérou).

Botswana: Badminton Boss Dismiss Allegations  Mmegi/The Reporter (Gaborone) 9 April 2008 Mogomotsi Moloi Gaborone

Botswana Badminton Association (BBA) vice president (administration) Kunyalala Mphinyane has dismissed claims that officials serve their own interests instead of developing the sport countrywide.
Some badminton coaches and administrators who preferred anonymity have complained that they are sidelined when decisions are taken by BBA officials. They expressed worry that BBA is not doing enough to develop coaches and players and they fear this will definitely kill the sport in the country.
"I am not happy at the way BBA does things. BBA is useless. That is why the sport is not growing," charged an angry insider who lamented that the northern region is neglected when it comes to selecting players for national duty.
But Mphinyane denied the allegations saying that they are driven by personal interests from people who are bitter about the progress BBA has made. He pointed out that BBA officials have always been open in what they do. "We try to become transparent as much as possible," he said.
An issue that has triggered tension in BBA is the recent trip to China by Muniovanda Kandjou, a teacher and badminton coach at Makalamabedi Junior Secondary School. Sources say that the man was not supposed to attend the high level-coaching course in China because he does not qualify for it. They believe he was favoured by Mphinyane because they are long time friends.
However, Mphinyane explained that Kandjou paid for his air ticket because the association had no money to send an official. "We encourage people to buy themselves tickets if they have money. That man (Kandjou) bought himself one (ticket) and managed to go to China," he asserted.
He said that affiliates must not just rely on the BBA but should try to fend for themselves. He stated that because badminton is still a developing game in the country, it is struggling financially but some members seem not to understand this. He said BBA is trying to develop players and coaches countrywide but sometimes the effort is thwarted by a shortage of funds.
He said parents and teachers should meet the association halfway in taking the sport to the next level. Mphinyane, who would seek another term in office when BBA holds its Annual General Meeting (AGM) next month, said it is not the association's intention to deny anyone a chance to develop. He fired a salvo at the complainants saying the reason why they are not well informed by the latest developments in the association is because they never attend meetings. "When we have meetings, a few people would turn up. But any other vital information is disseminated through regional co-ordinators and organisers."
He said countries like South Africa are far better than Botswana in sports because they are not dependent on associations. South African clubs cater for every expense in their sports, said Mphinyane.
He explained that BBA has resolved to form committees to monitor developments at regional level. "We want to introduce regional committees that would closely watch the developments on our behalf. These committees would send two representatives to national meetings and then give feed back to members," he said. He added that this would probably reduce complaints though it is impossible to satisfy everybody. The BBA vice president says the northern region is doing extremely well in the game, hence it has more players in all the national teams. In a move to introduce development structures at grassroots, BBA will soon introduce badminton at primary schools. Meanwhile, the national Under-15 tournament is currently ongoing at Tsholofelo Community Hall in Gaborone.

Uganda: Nigeria Test for Ekiring  New Vision (Kampala) 14 April 2008  Norman Katende Kampala

VICTORY for Edwin Ekiring at the Nigeria International in Lagos this week will boost his chances of making it to the Beijing Olympics.
The All Africa Games medalist is ranked 107 in the world, and needs to break into the top 100 to stand a chance. Automatic qualification is only assured for the top 70, many of who are from the same Asian power-houses, which gives Ekiring a chance.
Ekiring had improved his International Badminton Federation standings from 104 to 101 before dropping due to inactivity.
"I should be able to break into the top 100 in the world after the Nigeria tournament," Ekiring said.

La Flamme à Dar es-Salaam : Hakuna Matata 2008-04-14 Site Officiel Beijing 2008

Beijing, le 13 avril -- La Flamme olympique a respiré à l'aise dans la principale ville de Tanzanie, dimanche, aux bords de l'océan Indien., C'était certes un 13 avril, mais, pour cette huitième escale du feu allumé à Olympie, la cité dont le nom signifie en arabe « demeure de la paix » a su conjuguer hospitalité africaine et pouvoir des mots à la force du nombre propice par excellence de la tradition chinoise pour faire de cette brève escale en terre africaine une fête du sport plutôt qu'un safari.
« Je ne peux que remercier la population (...) Nous devons être fiers d'avoir été choisis pour représenter l'Afrique », a dit un des 79 relayeurs, Anne Tibaijuka, responsable de l'agence Onu-Habitat, qui a porté la flamme à l'intérieur du Stade national tanzanien.
Tout le long du trajet, dont le coup d'envoi avait été donné au siège de la Compagnie ferroviaire Tanzanie-Zambie (construite dans les années 1970...avec l'aide de la Chine !), des groupes de danseurs et de musiciens ont donné une note typiquement africaine à la manifestation.
Pour Kipchoge Keino, ancien athlète kényan qui a porté la flamme dimanche, la politique et le sport ne doivent pas être mélangés.
« Je pense qu'en tant que Comité olympique, la politique ne nous intéresse pas. Notre objectif principal est l'unité parmi la jeunesse du monde », a-t-il déclaré à la presse.Le sultanat d'Oman accueillera lundi la neuvième étape du relais olympique international.

Nigeria: Badminton - Nigeria Hosts Olympic Qualifiers    This Day (Lagos) 16 April 2008 Femi Atoyebi Lagos

About 40 international players drawn from around the world will converge at the Ikoyi Club 1938 for the Nigeria International Badminton Championship from today, with the grand finale coming up on Saturday.
According to the President, Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Mohammed Kabir Badamasuiy, the championship will produce African finalists for the Olympic Games in Beijing, with Nigeria hopeful, Grace Daniels expected to seal her participation for the global tournament. He said apart from picking tickets for the Olympic party, $ 5,000 prize money is at stake for first three winners among other prizes.
"The purpose of hosting this tournament is to announce Nigeria's glorious return to the game, but more importantly to see Grace Daniels pick her ticket to represent Nigeria and Africa in Beijing. A gap was created between Nigeria and the rest of the world in badminton because in the past six years, the country's name was not heard due to lack of sponsors and organisation, thankfully, we have a couple of sponsors ready to help Nigeria take her place in global badminton. Grace is able to go this far because she trained in Germany."
The Nigerian is top in Africa at the moment with about 13,000 points, followed by another player from Mauritius. 15 players will represent Nigeria at the tournament in the male and female categories, with an eye on giving future players the needed international exposure.
Among the participant is American Raju Rai, who has already booked an Olympic ticket. He said despite realising a long-nurtured dream of playing in an Olympics, he is in Nigeria to prove his readiness. "I want to win here and build on it in Beijing," he said. Players from other countries are already in the country for the event.

Nigeria: International Badminton Tourney Begins Today           Leadership (Abuja) 17 April 2008

All is now set for today's opening of the Nigeria International Badminton Championships, with the arrival of players from more than 23 countries.
According to NAN, Mobee Kayode, a member of the tournament's accommodation sub-committee said players from the U.S., South Africa, Cameroon and Mozambique were among the early arrivals. Ikoyi Club 1938 is hosting the championships, which will also serve as qualifiers for the Beijing Olympics.
"Our committee members were at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport on Monday night to receive some of the participants," Kayode said.
He said all welfare related issues for the players were being handled by the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) with the support of the Ikoyi Club 1938.
"Accommodation arrangements have been concluded. This is an international competition and their welfare is of international standard," said Kayode, who is also the Lagos Badminton Association Secretary.
The sport's world governing body, the International Badminton Federation (IBF) approved the Championship which is expected to end Saturday.
A cash prize of $1,000 each, will go to the winners of the men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles. Nigeria is expected to feature two teams in the tournament, comprising 12 males and 12 females. Olumide Bamiduro, secretary of the association said the championship apart from being an Olympic qualifier would afford players the opportunity to garner more points that would shore up their rankings at the international stage.

Badminton - Polémique au sein de l'AMB   Le retour de Dajee toujours contesté  Le Mauricien WE 20/04/2008

La nomination d'Annirao Dajee comme entraîneur national à l'issue de l'assemblée générale annuelle de l'Association mauricienne de Badminton (AMB), il y a trois semaines, continue toujours à faire des vagues. Certains joueurs, et non pas des moindres, ont exprimé leur mécontentement. Ces derniers ont même signé une pétition pour contester la nomination d'Annirao Dajee. Parmi, on retrouve les entraîneurs-joueurs Stephan Beeharry et Vishal Sawaram. Selon nos informations, une importante réunion du comité directeur se tiendra au courant de la semaine au cours de laquelle les membres se pencheront sur ce problème.
Le moins que l'on puisse dire, c'est que les ponts sont coupés entre Annirao Dajee et certains joueurs de la sélection nationale et ce, depuis un très long moment. Dans la pétition qui sera remis à l'AMB, cette semaine, les dis signataires ont d'ailleurs rappelé les différends qui ont existé entre Annirao Dajee et les joueurs dans le passé. L'entraîneur national avait d'ailleurs démissionné de son poste, en mars 2006, après que les joueurs l'ait accusé d'avoir été à l'origine de l'annulation d'un stage, à Bangalore, en Inde qui était en janvier de la même année. Il avait alors été remplacé par Mahadeven Yagumbrum et Dhiraj Gooneeadry avant que Stephan Beeharry ne prenne définitivement les rênes de cette sélection senior.
Entre-temps, Annirao Dajee était resté dans le giron pour s'occuper de la sélection juniors. Mais en août 2007, soit après les championnats d'Afrique juniors au Botswana, l'AMB avait pris la décision de ne pas renouveler le contrat. C'est le ttandem constitué de Stephan Beeharry et Vishal Sawaram qui avaient été alors appelés à prendre en main cette sélection junior, dans la mesure où les résultats obtenus n'avaient pas convaincu. Maurice avait obtenu quatre médailles de bronze notamment lors de la compétition par équipes, en double hommes, double dames et double mixte. Pourtant, deux ans auparavant, lors des championnats d'Afrique juniors toujours, la sélection n'avait obtenu qu'une médaille de bronze et Annirao Dajee avait été maintenu à son poste !
D'autre part, les joueurs contestataires ont indiqué qu'ils continue à progresser sous la férule de Stephan Beeharry et Vishal Sawaram. Cela fait que ces derniers ne comprennent, pour leur part, pourquoi l'assemblée a pris la décision de nommer un nouvel entraîneur national, alors que le ministère de la Jeunesse et des Sports a annoncé l'arrivée prochaine d'un entraîneur chinois. Nigeria International Badminton Championship ended over the weekend at the Badminton section of Ikoyi Club 1938, with Germany based Grace Daniels, picking the sole ticket to represent Africa at the forthcoming Olympic Games in Beijing.
The championship, which doubled as Africa Olympic qualifier for badminton event in Beijing was well attended, with players coming from The United States, Portugal, Spain Australia, Botswana, Zambia, Uganda, Ghana, Cameroon, Canada, China, Mozambique, Iran and host Nigeria.
Speaking after picking the ticket, Grace, who lost the women’s singles’ final to Bring Xin Xu of China expressed gratitude to Nigeria Olympic Committee, who gave her a scholarship to attend all qualifying games and train in Germany.
“Losing in this tournament’s final means that I still have to work hard in order to win an Olympics medal in Badminton. I can’t understand why I lost because I gave it my all but I will watch the video again and see where corrections are required. Am happy to pick the qualifying ticket however and promise to do my best for Nigeria,” said the 24 year old from Kaduna

Alex Paix of Portugal defeated United States’ Raji Rai 21-17, 9-21 and 21-16 to win the men’s single final.
While eulogising Grace’s effort and patriotism, President of Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Mohammed Kabir Badamasuiy said the championship, sanctioned by Badminton World Federation helped Nigeria’s youngsters showcased their talents among world best players, stressing the BFN’s readiness to always help the growth of the game in Nigeria.
“The championship will be used to rank all participants and it is one of Africa’s circuits, the rest being South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, Mauritius and Algeria internationals. Grace is the only African that will compete in Badminton in Beijing, making her the continent’s best. I am delighted to announce that Nigeria’s male team has also qualified to represent Africa in Thomas Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia in May.
It is an equivalent of Soccer World Cup and we need N9.5million to be there, but we are yet to secure sponsors. We thank Ikoyi Club and our sponsors for the championship we hosted, but we still need help to be in the world Badminton circle.”

In spite of her 1-2 loss to China, Grace Daniel, Nigeria's Badminton prospect for the August Beijing Olympics on Saturday in Lagos qualified for the event.
She lost to Bing Xin Xu of China at the final of Nigeria International Badminton Championship held at Ikoyi Club 1938.
Daniel, who lost the first set by 17-21, came second with a good display of combination of forearm and backhand to outplay her opponent at the second set by 21-9.
She lost the third set to a more experienced Chinese who has also won the Olympic qualifier by 6-21.
In a post-match interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Daniel attributed her defeat to loss of concentration.
``The championship was very challenging with lot of good players participating. It was an Olympic qualifier every player want to be. So, we all gave our best.
"I think the championship has confirmed to me that I need to work harder. I lost concentration after winning the second set having lost the first.
"There is, no doubt, my opponent is experienced, exposed and has better training than me,"' said Daniel.
She, however, promised that with more training and exposure she would attain better standard.Daniel said she would embark on training tour to prepare for the Olympics. "I am embarking on training tour immediately towards preparation for the Olympics.'' She added: ``Although, I am not promising gold at the Olympics but I am sure I am going to do well because my game has greatly improved with my Germany experience."
Andrew Renold, South African referee, said Daniel was Africa's best female player but stressed that she needed to improve on her techniques to make an impact in the world.
``Daniel has a lot of power in her hit but lacks techniques. That was what her opponent used. She is a talented player and I believe she can improve by participating in competitions,'' he said.
In the other results, Alex Paixao of Portugal beat Raji Rai of America 2-0 (21-13, 21-14) in the men's singles while in the women's double, the pair of Chinas Bing Xin Xu and Filipa Lawu beat Nigeria's Daniel and Mary Gideon by 2-0.
The mixed and men's doubles were dominated by Nigeria as the pair of Greg Okunghae and Daniel beat Akeem Ogunleye and Mary Gideon 2-0 while the duo of Jinkam Ifrem and Ola Fagbemi defeated Okunoghae and Ogunleye 2-1.
NAN reports that winners in the five categories shared the 5, 000 dollar prize money at stake at the competition.

UGANDA'S top badminton player Edwin Ekiring boosted his chances of qualifying for the Olympic Games by snatching two bronze medals at the Nigeria International. Ranked 107, Ekiring needs to jump into the top 100 in the world to stand a chance.
He now awaits the latest World Badminton Federation rankings before he competes in the final qualifier in Holland this weekend.
Ekiring fell at the semi-final stage in both the singles and men's doubles. He was beaten Alexandra Paixao from Portugal 21-14 11-21 22-19 in the singles and settle for a bronze medal.
His doubles team with Zambia's Elly Mwabe lost to the Nigerian pair of Greg Okunoghae and Akeem Oguhseye in the doubles semi-final. Ekiring has benefited from training abroad by the Olympic Solidarity. He early this year won the Mauritius International .
"He needs to do well in Holland. I am very optimistic but his fate will be decided when the new rankings are released to determine players who have won their tickets to Beijing," coach Simon Mugabi said.
