SEYCHELLES’ women’s involvement in the African qualifiers for the Uber Cup could be termed a disaster, and Seychelles Badminton Association (SBA) chairman Michel Bau is still annoyed with the organisation.  G.G. Nation SEY 03.03.2010
Speaking to Sports Nation yesterday, he said the competition in Uganda was a disaster organisation-wise.
It’s sad that such a big competition was organised in such a way,” he said.
“The competition was not played according to the schedule and there was no light in the gymnasium. Play started at 7am and sometimes ended at 11pm. Because of that players had to wake up at 5am.
“It was a real nightmare, and our women’s team lost their first match by a walkover against Burundi, the weakest team in the competition.
“There were too many misunderstandings and changes in the schedule and they cost us the match,” added Mr Bau.
“We made a formal appeal, but because people who sit on the technical committee were stuck in the African Badminton Federation’s annual general meeting, which was also a chaos, a decision could not be taken immediately. By the time they came to a conclusion, the referees had gone on with the competition and Burundi had played their second match. They just could not reverse the decision.”
The unfortunate circumstances annoyed the players, according to Mr Bau, and they lost their concentration.

NIGERIAN Jinkam Ifraimu came from a set down to upset Spaniard Ernesto Velazquez to the Roofings International badminton tournament men’s title at Sharing Youth Centre on Sunday.
Norman Katende reports It was Ifraimu’s second title after winning the Africa individual men’s at the same venue four days earlier.
But there was some consolation for Spain when Carolina Marin beat Greece’s Anne Hald-Jensen 2-1 to the women’s title as the ten-day event, at which Ugandans were knocked out at the quarters, closed.

ROOFING UGANDA INTERNATIONAL OPEN 2010 ... Les Conditions de jeu ... !!!
africa-badminton.com 27/02/2010

BWF STATUTES 2009/2010 PART III - SECTION 1B - APPENDIX 2  - Updated: 1st December , 2009

SPECIFICATIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL STANDARD FACILITIES
1. Major BWF tournaments

1.1 The minimum height from the floor over the full court for the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the Bimantara Cups, the World Senior Championships, the Sudirman Cup, the final stage of the Thomas and Uber Cups, and the Suhandinata Cup shall be 12 metres (39 feet).
1.2 The required height shall be entirely free of girders and other obstructions over the area of the court.

2. Other BWF and international events

2.1 The desirable height for all other international play is 12 metres (39 feet), but the minimum height is 9 metres (30 feet).
2.2 The required height shall be entirely free of girders and other obstructions over the area of the court.

BURUNDI made a surprise semi-final appearance in the World Thomas and Uber Cup badminton continental qualifiers as the Uganda men and women national teams were eliminated. Action is taking place at Sharing Youth Centre in Nsambya.
The Ugandan women started their campaign on a fairly tale, after Shamim Bangi won the first set against South Africa’s Stacey Doubell 21-11. But excitement took its toll as she lost the next two 21-11 21-9.
Margaret Nankabirwa, though, taking the second set against another South African Kerry-Lee Harrington 23-21, lost the first and third 21-12, 21-13, while Daisy Nakalyango failed Jade Morgan’s test in straight sets 21-14, 21-7, to open Uganda’s exit gate.
The men were no better as Wilson Tukire, Brian Ssuuna and Jimmy Okubi lost to Nigeria’s Olaoluwa Fabgeni, Ifraimu Jinkam Bulus and Ibrahim Adamu in straight sets.
But the biggest surprise of the day was the Burundi women, who came to the tournament as under dogs, but are now assured of a medal after reaching the semi-finals.
They earned a walk over against Seychelles in the quarterfinal action. The Islanders were penalised for arriving late.
Uganda’s chance for any continental medal is now vested in the Africa individual senior championships that start tomorrow.

This was after the technical committee reversed their decision to start the knockout events from the semifinal to the quarterfinal stage.
Only winners of the event at Sharing Youth Centre, Nsambya will represent the continent at the world event due in May in Malaysia .
Uganda women, 5-0 losers to Seychelles on the first day, advance to the next stage as their group only had two teams. They play South Africa today morning.
In the men, Brian Ssuuna came from a set down to beat Algeria’s Mohamed Belarbi 2-1, while Wilson Tukire was a straight sets winner over another Algerian Adel Hamek

Stage fright cost Uganda at badminton championship  The OBSERVER UGA Felix Eupal 21/02/2010
Uganda hosted the Africa Junior Badminton Championship at Nsambya Sharing Hall from February 17-19. A total of eight countries turned up for the tournament including; Nigeria,Seychelles, Ghana, Algeria, Egypt, Kenya and Mauritius.
Team Nigeria took the tournament by storm winning 13 of the 14 medals that were up for grabs. They won all men and womens singles, the doubles and only missed out to Ghana in the mixed doubles.
Team Uganda which had the 27 players, the largest number of players to ever be registered by a team in the under 18 badminton tournament were not able to win a single medal.
Daisy Nakalyango and Shamim Bangi who had made it to the semi final were also eliminated by Nigeria’s Fatima Azeez and Tosin Atolage.
Herbert Ebayo the captain of team Uganda told The Observer that, “We didnt prepare ourselves so well for the tournament as most of the players are in candidate classes and could not balance books with badminton”.
He further adds that, “The team also had a problem adjusting to the shuttles, this really cost us a lot”. All the Ugandan players had been playing with nylon shuttles and not the feather shuttles that are used internationally.
The shuttles which were impounded by URA at Entebbe airport were only cleared a few days to the start of the tournament. Ebayo says, “We only practiced with the feather shuttles for three days.”
Most of the team players had problems with the service, because the feather shuttles are lighter and faster. The team lost many points due to that as it was very hard to gain points from the serve.
The Uganda Badminton Federation is also to blame for failing to secure the shuttles in time, not to mention carpets which were laid on the last day.
However despite this team Uganda still failed to capitalize since the players were used to the floor because that is where they had been training.
The players were also out done by the size and physic of the opponents. Most of the Ugandan players kept on complaining that their opponents were over age, but it was just a lame excuse because their passports clearly indicated that they were actually under 18.
Uganda head coach Samuel Kabindi will hope to correct his errors that cost him the under 18 medals at the Thomas and Dale seniors championship that is under way.

Nakalyango, Bangi enter medal bracket    By Norman Katende New Vision UGA 18/02/2010
THE Ugandan pair of Daisy Nakalyango and Shamim Bangi are assured of a medal after reaching the semi finals of the Africa U-18 Badminton Championships at Sharing Youth Centre, Nsambya, in Kampala.
The two fought their way to the last four of the girl’s doubles event yesterday when they saw off Kenya’s Sheila Gakii and Lavina Martins in straight sets, 21-9 21-15.
They made up for a poor day of Uganda’s outing, after most of their counterparts failed to make it to the quarterfinals in both the boys and mixed doubles.
In the boys’ singles, Rogers Bakaki is Uganda’s last man standing with all other seeds having fallen out of action. He was due to play Nigeria’s Clement Krobakpo in the fourth quarter-final match. A win in this contest due today would assure him a medal position too.
Top seed Herbert Ebayo, who had earlier beaten Algerian Adel Hamek 2-1, also fell to Nigerian Gideon Babalola in straight sets
In a related development, Roofings Limited yesterday offered the local organising committee $5,000 (sh10m) for the cash prizes to be given to the top performers in the Roofings International event, which starts next week.
The prize money will be split by the Badminton World Federation.
Roofings director Anisha Lalani and Oliver Lalani handed over the package to Oscar Kambona, the treasurer of the local organising committee.

Nakalyango, Bakaki storm U-18s round 3     By Norman Katende New Vision UGA 17/02/2010

ROGERS Bakaki and Daisy Nakalyango fought their way to the third round of the Africa U-18 badminton championships, after registering wins over foreign opponents at Sharing Youth Centre yesterday.
Bakaki, 16, was on form, beating Egyptian Mostafa Morsi in straight sets 21-16, 22-20, to set up a third round clash against fellow Ugandan Kharmal Alidshan today.
He joined other Ugandans that included Ivan Kabagambe, 17, and Daniel Muhigo, 14, to advance to the third round, whose action starts this morning at the same venue.
Uganda’s top seed Herbert Ebayo,16, is due to take on a yet to be known Algerian opponent today, after his would be match was postponed because the venue was to be used for church service to commemorate Ash Wednesday.
The Algerian team had however not arrived by yesterday evening. If they do not report, then Ebayo will have to storm the next round on walkover.
In the girls’ event, Nakalyango, 16, was the only one standing, after all her teammates fell to foreign opposition.
Nakalyango fought hard to beat Ghana’s Stella Amansah in a 38 minute thriller on court three.
After taking the first set 21-17, excitement took its toll as Amansah recovered to claim the second set 16-21. However, Nakalyango regained composure, to take the final set 21-14 in the only girl’s game that went beyond two sets.
Other Ugandan top seeds that included Khotia Monisha, Jovia Kyomuhendo and Mable Namakoye all lost to foreign opposition.
Action continues today with the singles and doubles events at the same venue.

THE Badminton World Federation has returned German Herbert Ott as the tournament referee for the four international tournaments that Uganda hosts this month.
Norman Katende reports that Ott, who officiated at the Roofings International tournament last year, will be assisted by Uganda’s Harriet Nattabi.
“Nattabi is now an international referee after passing her exams in Mauritius. She will learn many things from Ott,” said the national association chief executive officer Simon Mugabi yesterday.
The tournament will also have Ethiopian Selam Dirma Demisie as one of the umpires, with a host Ugandans.
The local organising committee has also been boosted by financing from Computer Point (sh4m) and Shumuk (sh3m). Britania Products and Uganda Communications Commission, announced their packages earlier.
“We are still waiting for more corporate bodies to honour their promises but we are ready,” said Mugabi.
Uganda will be hosting the Africa Junior championships at the Sharing Youth Centre in Nsambya. The tournament will attract players under the age of 18, battling to qualify for the World Junior and the Singapore Youth Games due later in the year.
Action will then shift to Kabira Club for the continental Thomas and Uber Cup qualifiers.

Tourneys switched to Nsambya, Kabira     New Vision UGA By Norman Katende  Sunday, 14th February, 2010
THE Africa junior badminton championships have been switched to Sharing Youth Centre as Lugogo Indoor Stadium cannot be ready for the international tournaments this week.
Competitors start arriving in the country today ahead of the event that starts on Wednesday.
Uganda badminton association chief executive Simon Mugabi yesterday confirmed that the Nsambya based facility will host the junior events, before action shifts to Kabira International school for the Africa seniors and the Thomas and Uber Cup.
“Kabira was the best alternative after Lugogo pulled out, but the pupils will not get their holidays until the weekend. That is why we are using Sharing Youth centre for the first three days,” explained Mugabi.
Uganda Communications Commission and Brittania beverages are financially supporting the four international competitions Uganda is hosting this week. The education ministry will provide trophies and medals for the top performers.
Kabira will host the Africa region qualifiers to the Thomas and Uber Cup finals. The world event is due in Malaysia in May.
The institution will also host the Africa individual championships and the Roofings International open, where the top performers will earn world ranking points.
Meanwhile, Nigeria junior players will be the first to jet in the country today evening. Their team is expected to jet in at 11.30pm and will be followed by Burundi, Mauritius, Kenya and Ghana tomorrow.

Small sports need govt. & corporate support   Opinion By Wangwe Mulakha Deputy sports Editor
This week Kampala is going to be pretty busy. Uganda will be hosting four international badminton events starting on Wednesday. There will be the Africa junior championships, the continental qualifiers for the World Thomas and Uber Cup and the Africa individual senior championships. The events are expected to attract no less that 13 countries.
While hosting such meets promotes Uganda’s name, sponsorship of local ‘small sports’ remains a nightmare. Such sports rarely raise any finances via the gates nor do they attract big time financiers not government full fledged goodwill.
This scenario calls on the need for a partnership between the federations running small sports like badminton and weightlifting which recently hosted the Africa championships, the central government and the corporate companies to financially boost their programmes.
Hosting such continental events can also be looked at from the tourism angle. While this week’s tournaments are attracting not less than 13 countries, another five European nations are expected to take part in the Roofings International badminton tournament due later this month.
All this is happening with minimal sponsorship from the corporate world.
It is by attending and hosting such meets that our sports will flourish and the nation’s flag hoisted to a higher level.

THE Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has given the Thomas and Uber Cup qualifiers in Kampala, February 21-25 a sh2m boost, reports Johnson Were.
Local badminton governing body UBA patron Abel Rwendeire received the sh2m cheque and applauded UCC for the timely support and promised transparency and better performance.

Tukire to captain team to continental qualifiers     By Norman Katende and Phillip Corry  New Vision UGA Tuesday, 9th February, 2010
WILSON Tukire will captain the national men’s badminton team to the continental qualifiers of the world Thomas Cup that Uganda is set to host at Lugogo later this month.
In the absence of Edwin Ekiring, who is recovering from an accident, national badminton chief executive Simon Mugabi said that Tukire will take the mantle of planning for a success of Uganda’s team against continental power houses Nigeria, South Africa, Mauritius and Egypt.
“He (Tukire) is experienced, a good administrator and is also disciplined,” said Mugabi.
Mugabi said that Margaret Nankabirwa will captain the women’s side in the absence of Algeria based Gloria Najjuka.
“I have no plans to return to the game soon as right now I am undergoing physiotherapy with the doctors here in Holland,” Africa’s top badminton player Ekiring said on phone.
“The doctors tell me I will be okay to start playing at the end of this month, but am not ready to take any more risks.”
Ekiring was involved in a nasty car accident last December.
“I hope to be back in April and it will give me time to get back my fitness as I prepare for the remainder of the season, I don’t want to rush my return because this was a terrible accident.”

TWO-time defending champion Ali Shah-Hossein has confirmed participation in the Roofings international badminton championships. The event is slated for February 26-28 in Kampala.

BRIAN Ssuuna exhibited what he had learnt in a 10-day high performance training centre in Nairobi by winning the men’s singles title in the Baroda badminton open Sunday.
Ssuuna beat Jimmy Okubi in the final, 21-18, 21-19, at Aga Khan High School. Ssuuna has been in Nairobi for the Road to London 2012 training, courtesy of the continental badminton body.
Khotia Monisha won the women event after she beat Ritah Namusisi in straight sets, 21-16, 21-10 in the final.
Margaret Nankabirwa, who had travelled with Ssuuna for the same training did not participate in the calendar ending programme as she was busy with the university games at Nkumba University.
It was however the men’s double that was exciting as the experienced duo of Gilbert Ofuyuru and Ronald Kaserenge took on the junior stars in Daniel Muhigo and Ian Ssenoga – both finalists in the U-18 category.
Though the Ofuyuru, Kaserenge pair took the first set 21-12, they were shocked when their opponents rallied from a deficit of five points to force a deuce, before they won the second set 26-24. The Ofuyuru duo however used their experience to take the decisive third set 21-16.

Ekiring will take a break from badminton for nine weeks.
The experienced player is expected to be Uganda's main medal hope in the International Badminton Federation (IBF) sanctioned Thomas Uber Cup slated for Kampala in February.

UGANDA moved closer to the medal bracket in the inaugural All Africa Schools’ badminton Championships by beating power house South Africa, Norman Katende reports.
Uganda’s girls and boys had earlier downed hosts Mauritius in the first tie, the boys winning all their three singles and the two doubles.
However, there was some bit of tension for the girls who lost one single and a doubles game before they won 3-2. A semi-final placing would see Uganda assured of at least a bronze medal.

UGANDA started her campaign for the inaugural All Africa Schools badminton championships with a win over hosts Mauritius.
St Margaret’s Makerere and Mariam High are competing in the boys and girls’ competitions. Teams play three singles and two double games against each other for a result.

Meanwhile, Margaret Nankabirwa and Brian Ssuuna have a chance to showcase their talent at the sh5m Baroda open due this weekend at Aga Khan School.

The tournament was launched yesterday by Bank of Baroda managing director Pramod Gupta, who said that investing in the young generation will boost the youth in the future and also make them active.
“This will ensure that they use their life sparingly and also boost comradeship and fitness amongst them,” said Gupta.

According to the National team coach Simon Mugabi, the tournament was introduced by the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) to spot and nurture young talent, and points earned from the showpiece are considered for international rankings.
Speaking at the flag off of the team at the National Council of Sports (NCS) headquarters in Lugogo on Friday, the NCS assistant General Secretay Justine Ligyalingi noted the importance of such development programs and urged the youngsters to ensure that they benefit from this tournament.
Fatherly advice

“Represent us well in this historic tournament, it’s an honour to represent your country, but it comes with personal endeavours, strive to improve your rankings because we have the common wealth youth games among other events coming up, and this is your chance, so carry our flag high.” Ligyalingi said in a fatherly tone.
The General Secretary of the Uganda Badminton Association Eric Byarugaba revealed that the trip was only made possible by the late intervention of the Badminton Confederation of Africa, “we are lucky Uganda is taken as a model country, the two schools had failed to raise the $11,800 (Shs22m) for air tickets, so we hope to make the most of this,” he said.
However the money was not enough to facilitate travel of the schools’ games teachers and Simon Mugabi who travels in his capacity as a BCA member will chip in to help the eight students who face their colleagues from South Africa, Egypt, Algeria and Nigeria among others.

Ott, who is already in the country, was appointed by the Badminton World Federation to referee at the Roofings International Open early this year.
His presence at the Baroda open, due next weekend, is aimed at testing the national association's readiness to host international events slated for Kampala in February.
"He is here and we have met thrice. He will help us to discover the areas where we need to patch up ahead of the events," badminton chief executive officer Simon Mugabi said yesterday.
Uganda will host the Africa qualifiers for the Thomas and Uber Cup, the Africa individual and U-18 championships and the Roofings International Open in February.
Ott will work with Uganda's BWF recognised referee Ann Nattabi at Baroda Open expected to have action in the senior and age group categories.
Tournament sponsors Bank of Baroda are expected to announce their package next week, though Mugabi said that there will be no registration fees.
The official explained that the sponsors have already taken care of the registration cost.
