Chantal BOTTS 30/03/1976 - (32 ans)

Christoffel DEDNAM 08/08/1983 - (25 ans)

Roelof DEDNAM 21/08/1985 - (23 ans)  - Africa-badminton 20/08/2008

Kerry-Lee HARRINGTON 21/03/19886 - (22 ans)  - Africa-badminton 26/08/2008

The Badminton World Federation included the South African doubles pairs, Chantal Botts and Michelle Edwards, as well as the UFS students Chris and Roelof Dednam, in its Olympic list of invited qualifiers for the Olympic Games in Beijing. Both the women's and men's doubles events will include 16 pairs.

Nico Pretorius has sadly passed away on 6 March, after a long and brave struggle with his illness.

Nico had such a massive influence on the coaching of WP's top junior & senior players over the past 5 years.

Nico was the badminton coach of the W.Cape Sports Academy and was Morten Frost's personal assistant.

His coaching has attributed to WP winning several provincial team events. He is a great loss to badminton in South Africa and we will miss him.

We wish his mother, family, friends and WP/Boland Badminton our condolences.

The South African men's and women's badminton teams will be out to confirm their status as the best in Africa when they contest the African preliminaries of the Thomas and Uber Cups in Mauritius.
The African preliminaries of world badminton's most prestigious competitions outside of the Olympics take place from 17 to 21 February. Kenya was scheduled to host the events, but domestic unrest has led to them being moved to Mauritius.
The final stages of the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup will be held in Indonesia in May.
All continents represented

In the past, only Asian and European countries were able to qualify teams for the final stage, but now there will be at least one team from each of the five continents that qualifies.
Twelve teams will contest the finals, with six countries from Asia, three from Europe, one from Africa, one from Oceania, and one from Pan-America taking part.
Badminton South Africa, which won both preliminaries of the bi-annual event in 2006, has selected experienced teams for this year's tournaments, and they're strong favourites to repeat their successes of two years ago.
All Africa Games success

More recently, at the All Africa Games in Algiers in July 2007, South Africa finished top of the medals after a tight tussle with Nigeria, capturing three golds, two silvers, and three bronzes.
The men's doubles combination of Roelof and Chris Dednam and the women's doubles pairing of Michelle Edwards and Chantelle Botts both won gold.
The experienced Chris Dednam, a veteran of the 2004 Olympic Games, where he reached the final 32 of the men’s singles and mixed doubles, will spearhead the SA men's challenge, while Edwards will fulfil that role for the women's team. At the All Africa Games, apart from her doubles gold, she won silver in the singles, and bronze in the mixed doubles.

Women: Uber Cup

Manager: Prof. Martin Dednam
Enrico James will make his debut for South Africa, thus continuing a "tradition" of multiple members of one family representing SA; Chris and Roelof Dednam are brothers, while Wiaan and Anneri Viljoen are brother and sister.

B.S.A. (Site B.S.A. Février 2008)

The African preliminaries of the Thomas (world men’s team badminton championship) and Uber (world women’s team badminton championship) Cups from which the winning countries will represent Africa in the final stage will be held 17 to 21 February 2008 in Mauritius.  The tournaments were transferred from its original location, Kenya, as a result of the current domestic unrest in that country.

The final stages of the 2008 Thomas Cup and the 2008 Uber Cup will be held in Indonesia during May 2008.  In the past only Asian and European countries were able to qualify teams to the final stage, but now there will be at least one team from each of the five continents in the final stage.  The 12 teams to participate in the final stage will be, six from Asia, three from Europe, one from Africa, one from Oceania and one from Pan-America.

Badminton South Africa, which won both preliminaries of this bi-annual event in 2006, have selected experienced teams for this year’s tournament and should be regarded as strong favourites.  The following teams will be representing South Africa:  Thomas Cup -   Chris Dednam and Roelof Dednam (FS), Wiaan Viljoen (NG), Dorian James (Capt.) and Enrico James (WP);  Uber Cup -  Michelle Edwards (Capt.), Stacey Doubell and Jade Morgan (WP), Annari Viljoen (NG), Chantal Botts and Kerry-Lee Harrington (KZN);  National Coach:  Johan Kleingeld;  Manager:  Prof. Martin Dednam.

With Enrico James selected to make his debut, South Africa’s list of family members included in national teams has taken a new page.  Whereas the likes of Philips’ and Parsons’ of the past have represented the nation in different teams, the James brothers now join the Dednam brothers in the same team.  In addition, while the women and men will play in different competitions, Wiaan Viljoen will be joined by his sister Annari at the same tournament.

Poor support for badminton in SA  Xtra 04 December 2007

Badminton South Africa presented the 2007 South African International tournament in Pretoria from November 29 to December 2 and the tournament, being one of the very few Africa tournaments recognised by the BWF, was poorly supported.
Apart from players from the Africa badminton countries it only featured a few players from countries such as Spain, Iran and the USA especially in the singles events.
South African players dominated the doubles events once again, but could not manage to win a singles title. Chris and Roelof Dednam retained their men's doubles title, while Chris won a second gold by winning the mixed doubles title with Annari Viljoen.
Viljoen was also crowned twice, partnering with Jade Morgan to win the women's doubles title for the first time.
The women's singles title was won by Lucia Tavera of Spain and the men's singles title by Kaveh Merabi of Iran.

Badminton South Africa will close its season by presenting the 2007 South African International tournament in Pretoria, from 29 November to 2 December.  The tournament will be played in the Northern Gauteng Badminton hall at Tswabac Showgrounds, Hall F, in Souter Street, Pretoria.

The Referee will be Gretha Prinsloo, who is a BWF Accredited Referee, and the Deputy Referee will be Andrew Reynolds who is a BWF Accredited Umpire.

The program for the tournament is as follows:

  • Thursday 29 November 2007

17:00 - Managers’ Meeting

18:00 - Men’s Singles (1st & 2nd rounds) and Women’s Singles (1st & 2nd rounds);  20:00 - Men’s Doubles (1st & 2nd rounds) and Women’s Doubles (1st & 2nd rounds).

  • Friday 30 November 2007

10:00 - Men’s Singles (3rd & 4th rounds) and Women’s Singles (3rd & 4th rounds);  15:00 - Mixed Doubles (1st & 2nd rounds).

  • Saturday 01 December 2007

10:00 - Mixed Doubles (3rd & 4th rounds);  18:00 - All Semi-Finals.

  • Sunday 02 December 2007

10:00 - All Finals.

The above times may be altered to accommodate the size of the draws.  The closing function and prize-giving will take place upon completion of the finals.  Meals and refreshments will be available on sale throughout the tournament.

“Beijing 2008” Olympic Scholarship
We have been advised by our NOC (SASCOC) that Chris Dednam has been awarded an Olympic Scholarship relating to Beijing 2008.
“Only six scholarships were awarded in South Africa and we are indeed grateful that Badminton was one of them,” said Larry Keys, President of BSA.
As a scholarship holder, Chris will play an important role as ambassador of the Olympic Movement by representing a concrete example of the IOC’s policy of Solidarity throughout the world.
In addition to providing a training grant to an Olympic scholarship holder, Olympic Solidarity wants to ensure that the athlete maximizes his chances of qualifying for the Beijing Olympic Games by offering additional funding towards their air travel costs to participate in international qualification competitions.

Badminton brothers off to USA www.uovs.ac.za
KOVSIES's badminton brothers, Chris and Roelof Dednam, were after their recent international successes in Kenya and China included in the International Badminton Federation's preliminary list of qualifiers for the world individual championships in August in Anaheim, California.  Chris qualified for the singles championship, and the two brothers together for the men's doubles.
Michelle Edwards (WP) can also take part in the singles and together with Chantal Botts (KZN) in the women's doubles.  In the mixed doubles no pair of South Africa qualified, due to absence on the ranking list because they did not take part in sufficient international tournaments during the past year due to lack of financing.

UFS badminton player in Bulgaria for training camp  www.uovs.ac.za

ROELOF DEDNAM (21), a B Acc student in his third year at the University of the Free State, left for Sofia, Bulgaria, to join the International Badminton Federation's (IBF) East-European training centre for three weeks. Dednam was invited with Robert Abrahams (WP), the South African  junior champion, to attend the international training camp.  Sixteen international players from different countries take part in such a camp. The camp normally lasts two months, but they will return after three weeks in time for the national championships.
Since 2004, he and his brother Chris have been the national doubles champions, as well as the SA International champions for three years in succession.
He is a regular member of the national team, which he first made at the age of 18.  He is the holder of five under-15, five under-17, five under-19 and two senior national titles. He also won four gold and two silver medals at the All Africa Junior Championships in 2001 and 2003.
Dednam is generally regarded as the best doubles player in Africa, but is also rated third in South Africa as a singles player, while he again made his mark this year as a mixed doubles player.

Badminton players show their class  www.uovs.ac.za
Kovsie badminton players showed their class at the 2007 All African Championships held in Rose Hills, Mauritius during May, just as they did last year in Algeria.
In the individual championships in the men's double event Chris and Roelof Dednam again successfully combined for gold with a victory in the final over Steve Malcouzane and Georgie Cupidon of the Seychelles. Chris Dednam and Michelle Edwards also made the final
round in the mixed double event, but were beaten by Georgie Cupidon and Julliette Ahwan (Seychelles) to settle for a silver medal.
In the men's singles event Chris Dednam equalled last year's performance and was awarded with bronze, having lost 24-22 in the third set in the semi-finals in a marathon match against Eli Mambwe (Zambia). It was therefore once again in the men's singles where South Africa could not vest their supremacy in Africa. But, Chris improved his tally of medals to gold, silver and bronze. Roelof also showed good form by making the quarter-finals in the singles as well as the mixed doubles.
Fellow Kovsie, Wiaan Viljoen, joined the Dednam brothers and the rest of the South African team for silver in the team competition.
A week earlier, in the Mauritius International tournament, Chris won gold by winning the mixed doubles event with Michelle Edwards (against the same Georgie Cupidon and Julliette Ahwan), while the Dednam brothers had to settle for silver in the men's double event losing to Germany's Thomas Tesche and Jochen Cassel.

Chris and Roelof Dednam have qualified, because of their current position on the world ranking table, for the men's doubles in the World Badminton Championships to be played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in August this year.

The University of the Free State  www.uovs.ac.za
South Africa's badminton players have won gold in the team competition of the African championships during December in Algiers, Algeria.
The University of the Free State's players in the team, Chris and Roelof Dednam, in addition added more gold by winning the men's doubles title in the individual championship, while their fellow Kovsie, Wiaan Viljoen with his partner, Dorian James, played against the Dednam-brothers in the finals which brought him and South Africa the silver medal in that event.
Chris Dednam and Wiaan Viljoen increased their country's medals by also winning two bronze in the men's singles event.

South African badminton players last week in Algiers, Algeria, again dominated the medals table at the 2006 All African Championships with eight medals, including the team gold.

The team competition was concluded with victories over Botswana 5-0, Algeria 4-1, Sudan 5-0, Cameroon 5-0, Ethiopia 5-0 and Egypt 5-0 in the group A play-off, a 3-2 win over Mauritius in the semi-final, and a 3-0 victory over hosts Algeria in the final.
In the individual championships Michelle Edwards successfully competed for gold in the women's double with a new partner,
Stacey Doubell.  In the women’s single event Stacey Doubell also made her mark with a silver medal.
In the men’s double Chris Dednam also successfully competed for gold with a new partner, in his brother Roelof, while Dorian James this time partnering Wiaan Viljoen won the silver medal.  In the men’s single Chris Dednam was this time supported by Wiaan Viljoen, both winning bronze for their country.
Dorian James and Michelle Edwards (bronze in 2004) improved in the mixed double event by making the final round for a silver medal.
The young national junior champion, Robert Abrahams, and other relative newcomers to the senior team, Kerry-Lee Harrington and Charné du Preez, also managed to win a few good matches in the single events.

Team SA still ahead in Abuja  Brad Morgan  13 October 2003

After the weekend's exertions, South Africa had extended its lead at the All Africa Games, boosting its medal haul to 90 in total, made up of 39 gold, 27 silver and 24 bronze medals. Nigeria, in second place, had closed the gap, but with 60 medals in total and 26 golds, was still some way back.
But with the focus shifting to athletics in the final week of competition, Team SA will have its work cut out to maintain its lead.
The host country was boosted by strong performances in powerlifting, wrestling, badminton and table tennis, but South Africa excelled in swimming and gymnastics, with South Africa's women totally dominating in the pool.
Egypt too continues to perform well. Although the North Africans have won fewer gold medals than Nigeria, they are ahead of the West Africans in terms of total medals won. In 1999 they were second behind South Africa, and in 1995 they won the same number of medals as the South Africans, but picked up fewer gold and silver medals.
So expect Egypt to finish strongly and push South Africa and Nigeria hard for first and second spot.
Badminton success, soccer upset

South African badminton players also showed up well. Michelle Edwards and Chantelle Botts won the women's doubles, while Edwards finished runner-up in the singles event. Edwards won a further silver medal in the final of the mixed doubles with Stewart Carson, while the title went to another South African pair, Chris Dednam and Antionette Uys.
Dednam also enjoyed success in the men's singles, picking up bronze. He teamed with Johan Kleingeld to win bronze in the doubles too. Antoinette Uys and Marike Daubern also took bronze in the women's doubles.
