Ola Fagbemi of Nigeria lifted the men’s singles title
after fighting off compatriot Jinkan Ifrahimu as the curtains came down
on the All Africa Senior Badminton Championships on Thursday. Fagbemi
won 2-0 (21-17, 21-18) over Egyptian Abderahman Kashkal in a closely
contested semi-final while Ifrahimu beat Steve Malcouzar of Seychelles
2-0 (21-18, 21-13).
Under the keen eye of their coach Mohammed Baku, the two
men played a very tense, fast and highly entertaining game. The battle
for the women’s singles title was on last evening. South African top
seed Stacey Doubel beat Katherina Paulina of Seychelles 2-0 (21-13,
21-17) while another Seychellois, Juliette Ah-Wan, defeated Susan Ideh
of Nigeria 2-0 (21-17, 21-12).
The mixed doubles semis were hotly contested, with South
Africa falling to Seychelles 2-0 (21-13, 22-20). Nigerians won over
Mauritius by 2-0 (21-10,21-19) to also book a slot in the finals played
late on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the second international tournament this week
starts when the Kenya International Open, which is expected to register
a high turnout, commences today at the same venue. Kenya will be
entering 10 players in the games where participants will be seeking to
up their points and rankings, said Anna Maina, chairlady of the Kenya
Badminton Association.
Denmark, India, United States of America and Iran have
already sent in their players while players from Canada, Scotland and
Slovensky were also expected late on Thursday. All the other African
nations that have been in Kenya all week will also join in the three-day
event that comes to an end on Sunday.Mercy

Kenya on Tuesday registered disappointing results
in the individual events of the ongoing All Africa Senior
badminton championship at the Moi International Sports Centre,
Kasarani.
Only high school student Mercy Joseph, 23, won.
She played a fast-paced game with ease from the start, making
high serves and quick returns to floor 23-year-old Arine
Nininahalwe of Burundi 2-0 (21-5,21-12) in her first match to
make it to the next round of the women’s singles.
“She did not play so much, so I capitalised on
that to push her with every round of my game,” Joseph said.
Alfred Muthomi lost 2-1 (21-19, 9-21,6-21) to
South African Enrico James in a match he reckoned he gave his
best shot.
“I was playing against someone who is very well
exposed internationally, yet I have not played in an
international tournament in over a year,” Muthomi said.
First seed Patrick Ruto lost 2-0 (21-16,21-13) to
Seychelles player Georgie Cupicon in the men’s singles.
Naomi Kemunto was then beaten by another
Seychelles player, Katherina Pauline, 2-0 as Hosni Hadia of
Egypt edged Kenya’s Anita Alube 2-0 and Jiten Patel lost 2-0 to
Elewa Femi of Nigeria.
Patrick Kinyua fell 2-0 to South Africa’s Jacob
Maliekal.
Meanwhile, World Badminton Federation president
Young Joon King arrived in the country on Tuesday to attend the
week-long championship.

BADMINTON - KENYA READY TO HOST MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
By Ayumba Ayodi
All is set for festivals that pit teams from
the world over
KENYA will on Saturday play host to more than 21 countries for two
major international badminton championships-the biennial Africa
Senior and the annual Kenya International.
The most prestigious continental competition will run for five days
at the Moi International Sports Centre Complex (gymnasium) at
Kasarani, pitting players from 13 countries.
The event will then pave way for the Kenya International contest
from April 24 to 26 at the same venue, involving teams from Africa,
America, Europe and Asia.
"Everything is in place and we are ready to rumble. It has been a
long time since we staged a championship of such magnitude, and I
hope they will be a major success," said Kenya Badminton Association
(KBA) chairperson Anna Maina.
Challenge Seychelles, who are the defending Africa champions in team
play, jet into the country for a challenge from hosts Kenya, South
Africa, Mauritius, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Ghana, Cameroon,
Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt, Uganda and Algeria.
The Indian Ocean island nation beat South Africa in the final two
years ago in Mauritius.
The Kenya International, which is part of the African International
Circuit, has European entries in Scotland, Denmark, Slovensky and
Greece. From America are United States of America and Canada teams,
while India and Iran will represent Asia.
Maina told a press conference yesterday upon receiving an estimated
Sh2 million sponsorship that the Kenya International championship
has prize fund of $5,000 (Sh400,000).
Japan-based Yonex, the world's biggest brand name in badminton, gave
Sh1.2m, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya Sh460,000 and New
Edge Communications Sh40,000.
Nairobi Bottlers unveiled soft drinks and drinking water worth
Sh100,000, while MFI Office Solutions will provide equipment to the
championships' secretariat. Kenya Airways offered subsided flight
charges to the teams.
The Kenya team of eight players for the two contests have been on
residential training for the last three weeks under coach John
Odhiambo at the Kenya Premier Club.
They are Africa's doubles second best pair of Himesh Patel and
Patrick Ruto, Alfred Muthomi, Patrick Kinyua, Fred Gituku, Anita
Alube, Naomi Kemunto and Jemimah Mang'eni.
