Breakthrough Year for
UBA The Monitor (Kampala) 2 January
2008 Douglas Bugingo Kampala
THE year 2007
was quite a landmark in the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA)
fraternity, generally. It registered the unprecedented achievement
when our own Edwin Ekiring who is also the country's first seed and
Africa's seed two opened Uganda's medal bracket at the All Africa
games, held in Algeria, in July.
International respect

Ekring earned Uganda her first medal at the games when he finished
third in the men's singles where he grabbed a bronze. He lost to
Africa's seed three Elly Mambwe of Zambia. That was no mean
achievement in the history of badminton. Ekring's medal preceded
Moses Kipsiro's gold in athletics to make Uganda's medal tally at
the games two.
The act of International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarding a
scholarship to Ekiring to undergo training in Germany at
Saarnburcaek Training Center ahead of the 2008 Olympic games is
another achievement for UBA. As u read this review, Ekring is
already settled in Germany enjoying with Luxberg badminton club as
the first Ugandan player to play in the Germany league.
"He (Ekiring) got the IOC scholarship early this year and this was a
big relief to UBA that was entirely funding his earlier programs to
prepare for the Olympic games," national coach Simon Mugabi said.
Nomi no-show
The month of January though did not start off well as the biggest
event, Nomi Open did not unfold as per the calendar. The lovers of
the sport were consoled by the national trials. Mugabi who doubles
as UBA events coordinator argued that the sponsors diverted their
budgets to the Chogm preparations the reason why Nomi Open and other
events in the months of February, September, October and November
were not held.
March was quite successful as events took place as planned. The
Taibah Schools championship slated for three days climaxed
successfully at Lugogo indoor with Nakasero PS retaining the U-10
girls title.
St. Peters won the boys title in the same age group.
Other accolades went to Railway PS for winning the U-13 boys trophy,
Nakasero (U-13 girls), St. Margaret College (U-15 boys), Mariam High
(U-15 girls, U-18 girls) and Lubiri SS who won the U-18 boys
category. Though there were no local events, April saw UBA sending a
team of 14 players to Mauritius for the Mauritius International.
Ekiring, who joined the team from Germany, was in great shape,
winning a bronze after falling to Africa's seed one Nabil Lasmari of
Algeria in the semi finals. One day after Team Uganda connected to
Nairobi for the Kenya International and finished third overall after
being eliminated by a strong Nigerian side in the semi finals.
UBA's successful year rotated mostly around Ekiring. The 23-year-old
lanky player solely carried the country's flag in May at the All
Africa Senior Badminton Championships in Algeria. His performance
was however not impressive as he got upset and bowed out of the
tournament in the group stages.
Exciting battles
Competition on the local scene resumed in June with the Picfare
Schools tournament at Lugogo. Powerhouse St. Peters PS dominated in
the U-10 boys' and girls categories while Nakasero and Railways
shared wins in the U-13 girls and boys respectively.
Mariam High won the ladies U-15 age group before St. Margaret
College grabbed the boys' title.
July witnessed the national senior team captained by Ekiring take
part in the All Africa games. Other players on the team included
Abrahm Wogute, lady players Gloria Najjuka and Ritah Namusis.
Lack of funds denied the national U-19 team a chance to go to
Botswana in August for the All Africa Junior Championship.
"Almost 90% of our budget depends on sponsorship especially from
companies, that is why this year most of our arrangements got
affected. Every company we approached for sponsorship said they were
budgeting for Chogm and could not help.
"However in November we managed to send the senior team in South
Africa for the South Africa International and Uganda was 4th out of
16 countries," Mugabi said.
Baroda Open held on December 14 climaxed the year with a superb
event that attracted Kenyan players, though we still dominated the
game.
Bright prospects
Ugandan players, Sarah Kyazike and Feda Faisal dominated the U-10
age group the same story was in the U-13 category where Lina
Nalubega and Daniel Muhigo won. In the senior category (U-15), Bangi
Shamim retained her title so was Daniel Muhigo in the boys' event.
Wogute and Rose Nakalya won the men and ladies
events respectively to deny the Kenyans any silverware at the event."Many
talents have been discovered this year and I'm sure if this can be
maintained we can be a dominant force in Africa in the coming years,"
Mugabi said.
Ekiring and the national teams in the senior
and junior categories have branded well UBA's name, Germany referee
Herbert Otto revealed this while officially delivering an assortment
of sports equipment donated by the Germany national team players to
UBA at Kampala Club. The association also got another donation that
contained 50 rackets, 100 tins of shuttlecocks and 20 nets from WBF.

Amateur Open " souligne Ravin Sandrasagren.

Reste juste a

Ekiring Targets
Uganda Event The Monitor (Kampala) 9
January 2008 Douglas
Bugingo Kampala
GERMANY based Ugandan Edwin
Ekring is among the big names that will participate in the
maiden Uganda International Badminton Championship slated for

The three-day event sanctioned by the World Badminton Federation
is an international tournament and will double as this year's

Ekiring, who won a bronze medal at the All Africa Games in

said he is keen to win the US$5,000 or Shs8.5m that is at stake
for the champion.
"I will be arriving in Uganda on January 23. There is no way I

to play because I want to improve on my world rankings as well
as winning the cash prize money," Ekring told Daily Monitor from
his training center in Germany.

BADMINTON Beijing 2008 Karen
Foo Kune: " Il me reste quatre mois pour me qualifier "
MauricienSports 11/01/2008
La course à la qualification olympique pour
Beijing s'intensifie pour Karen Foo Kune. " Il me reste
actuellement 97e mondiale, soit dix places devant moi.

PLAYERS from 18 countries

"I can reveal to you that we have received a record entry of 18

the Mauritius International worth $7,500(sh12.7m). Uganda's

Badminton -
Classement de la BWF
Grace Daniels devance désormais Karen Foo Kune
Mauricien Week-End
13/01/2008
World Federation (BWF).
Yonex Welsh International. Lors de ce tournoi, elle s'est
inclinée dès le premier tour.
" Je dois continuer à faire des tournois. Ce n'est que comme
cela que j'arriverais à retrouver la place de no 1 et ainsi me
qualifier pour les Jeux Olympiques. Je suis arrivée à la moitié
du chemin. Ma motivation à me donner à fond est toujours là.
Actuellement, je me sens en forme. Je suis rentrée à Maurice le
24 décembre et depuis, j'ai eu quatre à cinq sessions
d'entraînement avec la sélection. "

Badminton - Madeirense Ana Moura deve marcar presença mas…Marco
Vasconcelos no Uganda e Brasil
www.jornaldamadeira.pt
16/01/2008
Marco Vasconcelos prossegue a sua
“odisseia” rumo a Pequim.
No Badminton e à escala internacional alguns
No sector feminino a madeirense
no Irão.
desportiva do mundo.
|
Marco
Vasconcelos: 18º no ranking europeu e em 58º no
ranking mundial
Filipa Lamy: 21º no ranking europeu e 58º no ranking
mundial
Ana Moura: 25º no ranking europeu e 66º, no ranking
mundial. |

Zimbabwe: Badminton
Set for Revival The Herald (Harare) 16
January 2008 Collin Matiza Harare
The sport of badminton is
set to be revived in Zimbabwe with the expected visit of the
secretary-general of the Badminton Confederation of Africa, Raj
Gaya of Mauritius, this week.
Gaya is scheduled to fly into the country this evening on a
four-day fact-finding mission in which he is expected to meet
all the stakeholders of badminton in Zimbabwe. The sport of
badminton in Zimbabwe lost its appeal in the 1990s and has of
late been mainly played in high schools with no national body
running the game in the country.
But that is all set to end with the arrival today of Gaya who
will be accompanied by BCA vice-president, Godfrey Masuka of
Zambia. Gaya and Masuka will be visiting Zimbabwe at the
invitation of a local badminton player Chipo Zumburani, who has
all along been fighting to revive her favourite sport in the
country.
Zumburani told The Herald yesterday that Gaya and Masuka will be
in Harare for four days and they will have the opportunity of
meeting officials from the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, the
Sports Commission and National Association of Secondary Heads.
"Gaya, in his official capacity as the secretary-general of BCA,
and Masuka are coming to pay us a visit this week in an effort
to revive the sport in Zimbabwe.
"They will be meeting ZOC, the Sports Commission and school
heads of those schools that are currently playing badminton or
have the sport's facilities at their schools. "They will also
meet the players and I think this will go a long way in bringing
the sport back on its feet as it has been dormant for three to
four years," Zumburani said.
During their stay in Harare, Zumburani said, Gaya and Masuka
will be meeting their accommodation expenses "since they are
only here to assist us to revive the sport". She also revealed
that badminton currently has no national body in place but they
hope to have it in place after Gaya and Masuka's visit to this
part of the world. "We have no national executive in place but
John Imbeah and myself have been organising some events at
school level only. But we hope to come up with an interim
committee after the visit of Gaya and Masuka," Zumburani said.
But what is badminton?
Badminton has been played in Zimbabwe for over 70 years but ask
anyone, especially the black population if they know of the
sport and you are almost guaranteed a "No" for an answer. Those
who do know a little about the sport think that it is squash or
tennis, mainly because the rackets look similar. The badminton
racket is similar to a squash racket but slightly smaller and
lighter. The game is played indoors with a net of 1.8 metres
high and instead of a ball, a shuttlecock is used. In addition
to these points, the shuttlecock is not allowed to bounce like
squash or tennis. All in all it is easy to see that badminton is
unlike any other sport.
If anything, the skills required could probably be described as
a combination of those used in volleyball and squash. Agility,
speed, power, deception and fitness are all important qualities,
which a good badminton player should have. These, combined with
powerful thinking and a good chain of thought, will make an
excellent player.
At one stage, in the late 1990s, Zimbabwe used to have 170
badminton players countrywide, most of whom were white but the
sport was not only confined to white players as they were a
number of blacks who were also playing it. Some of these players
are Kudakwashe Chindavata, Moses Chiparura, Noel Dumisani,
Cosmas Chamunokora and Brighton Kapuya, a former Zimbabwe
Under-18 champion.
Presently the sport is being played at some Harare schools such
as Queen Elizabeth, St George's, Prince Edward and Mufakose I
High. |

Badminton 2008 Calendar -
Prize Money & Countries
Written by Loh
Thursday,
17 January 2008 Website
Badmintoncentral.com Do you know which of the SS
countries gives the highest prize money (in US$)?
Korea - $300K! (Despite the forthcoming attempt to throw
out the Korean President of BWF)
And which European country with a strong badminton background in
the past dishes out only $5K as prize money? Sweden!

It is just like a first-world country paying third-world wages.

Here is the pecking order.....
Super Series
$300K - Korea
$250K - Indonesia and Hong Kong
$200K - Malaysia, England, Switzerland, Singapore, Japan, China
(SS & Masters), Denmark & France.
GP Gold
$170K - Chinese Taipei
$120K - India, Philippines, Thailand & Macau
GP
$80K - Germany
$50K - Bulgaria, USA, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Vietnam &
Netherlands
International Challenge
$35K - Canada (Quebec)
$15K - Brazil, Poland, Finland, Netherlands, Spain, France,
Vietnam, Canada (Saskatchewan), Belgium, Bulgaria, Korea, Norway,
Scotland & Pakistan
$ 6K - Slovenia
International Series
$5K - Sweden, Uganda, Iran, Austria, Croatia,
Portugal, Romania, Thailand, Singapore, Nepal, Czech Republic,
Jordan, Cyprus, Syria, Hungary, Iceland, Malaysia, Brunei &
Wales.
As you can see from the above, some countries host two
tournaments with prize monies.
It would appear that BWF was able to interest hitherto unknown
countries to hold international tournaments as the numbers have
increased (I think).
One very glaring finding is that Asia continues to
dominate in terms of both prize monies and the number of
tournaments as a great majority belong to the SS and GP Gold
categories.
Western Europe and the Americas do not seem to
make much headway, with the exception of 'newcomers' Portugal
and Brazil (?). Similarly with Africa, which can only
boast of Uganda. South Africa, which should be the strongest and
perhaps the most prosperous, was not in the picture.
Eastern European countries seem to show greater interest
with names like Bulgaria, Slovenia, Poland, Croatia, Romania,
Hungary and Czech Republic. Unfortunately, a strong badminton
country like Russia was unable to obtain support. Maybe they
still have not quite sorted out some internal problems.

To me names like Vietnam (especially), Pakistan, Iran, Nepal,
Jordan, Cyprus, Syria, Iceland, Brunei and the Eastesrn European
countries are a welcome sight. And to see the Philippines
catapulting to the GP Gold level is a sight to behold!
From the BWF information, the following highlights were
revealed:
1. November is the busiest month with 10
tournaments with prize monies ranging from $5K to $250K.
2. September is the most lucrative with prize
monies totalling $760K (2 SS and 3 GP), followed closely by
June ($745K comprising 2 SS and 2 GP).
3. May 11-18 will see the top qualified countries
fighting for the Thomas and Uber Cups in Jakarta. After
that the professionals may be able to win some money sponsored
by KLRC for the Bulgaria Open Grand Prix.
4. August will be the most depressing month for
badminton professionals with only $15K in the offing in the
Indonesian Challenge at Surabaya during the last week. However,
it is also the most important for the Beijing Olympics
will be held from 8 - 24 and whoever wins the gold medal will be
the happiest badminton player and will be richly rewarded by
their respective countries.
Of course we should expect some dramatic changes to the BWF
management and hopefully goodness and progress will result from
them. They must try to obtain multi-million contracts for the
professionals instead of wasting time, money and effort with in-fighting!

Africa: Badminton
Confederation of Africa Delegation to Meet Stakeholders
The Herald (Harare) 18 January 2008 Harare
The visiting Badminton
Confederation of Africa delegation will today meet all
stakeholders in the sport at Prince Edward School.
The delegation - made up of vice-president Godfrey Masuwa and
secretary-general Raj Gaya - arrived in the country on Wednesday.
They met the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee whom they are working
with closely to try and revive badminton. Raj Gaya said their
four-day fact-finding mission will see them meet various
stakeholders and set up an interim committee.
"We want to look at what is going on and set up an interim
committee. "We are cutting across the section and would like to
invite all stakeholders, anybody interested in the sport, to
come and attend the meeting," said Gaya. The delegation will
meet with the Sports Commission, parents, schools and
universities before setting up the committee.
The confederation will also donate 100 shuttle corks, 50 rackets
and nets towards the development of the sport.
Their main target will be schools. A local player Chipo
Zumburani, who invited the officials, said they expect the visit
to boost the sport in the country. "We expect to see a lot of
activities being lined up after this and there should be
formation of clubs and the sport should spread into other parts
of the country.
"We will also hope to get a lot of assistance in terms of
coaching and this should be the start of our marriage with the
confederation."
The sport of badminton lost its appeal in the 1990s and has of
late been mainly played in high schools with no national body
running the game in the country. |

PRÉLIMINAIRES DE LA THOMAS & UBER CUP La préparation
s’accentue malgré les violences au Kenya
L'express.mu
21/01/2008 Neeta PERSAND

Filipa Lamy,
atleta de Badminton integrada no Projecto Pequim do Comité
chegada à meia final do torneio.

EDWIN Ekiring’s German-based coach, Croona Per

with more training and exposure.
The Swedish Henrik, who travelled to Uganda with Ekiring and
over ten foreign players from the Olympic Solidarity academy,
added that the sh20m Roofings Uganda International badminton
tournament will help gauge Ekiring more.
“The performance has been improving though he has not had a
chance to reach the semi-finals in any international events he
has competed in against top class athletes in Europe,” said
Henrik.
He added: “He has got on well with the basics and techniques. He
will surely shine with a supportive home crowd.”
Ekiring, who had relaxed at Kampala Club, as Lugogo underwent
final touches ahead of the championship, looked forward to a
great event.
“I look forward to playing in front of home fans. I will give it
my best, though there are many players ranked ahead of me. I
will not to let you down,” said Ekiring. |

africains. |

Sports Awards of the Year 2007

GEORGIE Cupidon reasserted his status as Seychelles’ top athlete
by picking up a second Sportsman of the Year title in a row during

In fact it was a grand slam for badminton as it is
the second time in the 23-year history of the Sports Awards of the
Year crowning ceremony that the best male and female athletes come
from the same sport.
With a bucket-load of nominations, the sport of badminton also had
Juliette Ah-Wan crowned Sportslady of the Year for her second

Previously honoured in 2000, Ah-Wan was up against Laser sailor
Meggy Gertrude (runner-up), athlete Lindy Leveau-Agricole (third),

Ekiring was
magnanimous after his victory |
E. Ekiring bt P. Rodrigo (Peru) 2-1
E. Ekiring bt M. Vasconcelos (Portugal) 2-0
EDWIN Ekiring’s world ranking is destined to improve after he upset
world number 42 Marco Vasconcelos. Ekiring won in straight sets at
the Roofings Uganda Badminton International at Lugogo Friday
afternoon.
The unseeded Ekiring, who is ranked 132 in the world, dispensed off
the tournament seed two 21-18, 21-18 to set up a mouth-watering
clash against Chinese-born Malaysian Pei Wee Chung in the third
round. The event ends today with the finals at 1pm.
“It was a good game. He is improving fast,” said his coach Simon
Mugabi as he congratulated the player.
The win followed an earlier dismissal of Peru’s Pachero Rodrigo,
when he came from a set down to take the game 16-21, 21-18, 21-13.
“The coach has tapes of most of the stars and we really brain storm
before any game,” an excited Ekiring revealed.
The Ugandan is hoping to get maximum points in the tournament that
might help him qualify for the Beijing Olympic Games scheduled for
August. |

Sports Awards of the Year 2007
- Ah-Wan, Cupidon rewarded Nation
Seychelles 28.01.2008
Our photo shows the badminton pair of Juliette
Ah-Wan and Georgie Cupidon after they had received the Sportslady of
the Year and Sportsman of the Year floating trophies from guest of
honour President James Michel (second from left).

Also in the picture are the Minister
for Community Development, Youth, Sports & Culture Vincent Meriton (left),
the chief executive officer of Cable and Wireless (Seychelles)
Charles Hammond (second from right), and Air Seychelles’ public
relations and communications manager Glenn Pillay (right).
This is the second time in the 23-year history of the Sports Awards
of the Year crowning ceremony that the best male and female athletes
come from the same sport. The first time was in 1992 and the top
awards went to track and field athletes Mirenda Francourt and Danny
Beauchamp.
The Sports Awards of the Year crowning ceremony was held last Friday
night at the International Conference Centre of Seychelles (ICCS).
Sports Awards of the Year
2007 - Ah-Wan, Cupidon scoop top awards
Nation Seychelles 28.01.2008
THE sport of badminton registered another success last Friday as
Georgie Cupidon picked up his second Sportsman of the Year award in
a row and Juliette Ah-Wan returned as Sportslady of the Year, seven
years after her first triumph.
Ah-Wan
and Cupidon, who form the Seychelles illustrious mixed doubles pair
- winner of the gold medals at the Senior African Championships in
Mauritius and the Ninth All-Africa Games in Algeria in 2007 – fended
off stiff opposition to receive the huge floating cups from guest of
honour, President James Michel, during the Sports Awards of the Year
2007 crowning ceremony held at the International Conference Centre
of Seychelles (ICCS).
Community Development, Youth, Sports and Culture Minister Vincent
Meriton presented the two badminton players with the cups which they
will keep, their R15,000 cheques and certificates; on behalf Air
Seychelles, Public Relations and Communications Manager Glenn Pillay
handed them a return ticket to any European destination and Cable &
Wireless Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Charles Hammond gave each one
of them a mobile phone.
This is only the second time in the 23-year history of the Sports
Awards crowning ceremony
that both the best male and female athletes come from the same
sport. The first time was in 1992 when Mirenda Francourt and Danny
Beauchamp coming from track and field athletics were crowned.
Besides President James Michel, First Lady Nathalie Michel and
Minister Meriton, the other distinguished guests at the ceremony
included Vice-President Joseph Belmont, Designated Minister Danny
Faure, Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Herminie, Opposition
Leader Wavel Ramkalawan, President of the Court of Appeal Francis
McGregor, ministers, principal secretaries and representatives of
the Diplomatic Corps.
In fact, admission to last Friday’s glittering ceremony which was
switched from the SMB Exhibition Hall to the ICCS was on invitation
only.
Other prizes
As runners-up, Laser sailors Meggy Gertrude and Allan Julie received
R8,000, 50% reduction on return tickets to Johannesburg from Air
Seychelles, cups and certificates.
In third position, female athlete Lindy Leveau-Agricole and
badminton player Steve Malcouzane pocketed R6,000, a cup, a
certificate and a 50% reduction on return tickets to Singapore from
Air Seychelles. It is to note that the National Sports Council (NSC)
has sponsored the other 50% for the airline fares to Johannesburg
and Singapore.
Fourth place finishers Janet Thélermont (weightlifting) and Kitson
Julie (boxing) got R4,000 each, a cup and a certificate, while the
two fifth finishers – badminton player Catherina Paulin and
weightlifter Charles Siméon - received R3,000, a cup and a
certificate.

It was clearly a wonderful night for
badminton as Joel Dubel was crowned Young Male Athlete of the Year,
while Laser sailor Meggy Gertrude took the Young female Athlete of
the Year title. They both received R3,000, a cup and a certificate.
As runners-up, basketballer Abdel Sylla and volleyballer Marielle
Bonne got R2,000, a cup and a certificate, while third place
finishers table tennis player Anniessa Benstrong and footballer
Aaron Jean received R1,000, a cup and a certificate.
Cable & Wireless CEO Hammond and Thomas Dauban, director of Human
Resources within the same telecommunication company, presented the
prizes to the young athletes.
During the same ceremony, which saw performances by Elijah, André
Sinon, Christianna Alexis and the School of Dance, all male and
female athletes chosen as the best by their respective federations
or associations got R3,000.
Four special awards were also given out on the night with basketball
referee Tracey Hétimier being voted official of the year, William
Dixie coach of the year, George Sicobo volunteer of the year and the
Seychelles Table Tennis Association (STTA) best federation/association
of the year.
For the first time in the history of the Sports Awards of the Year
crowning ceremony, disabled athletes received certificates and the
recipients were Lorna Lespoir and Steven Ernesta.
……………..
What the winners said:
Sportsman of the Year Georgie Cupidon
“When I was crowned Sportsman of the Year 2006, I said that I would
work hard to retain the title. I’ve done it and the target is to win
a third consecutive title. I thank everyone who has helped me in one
way or another in achieving victory on the court. I deserved to win
in 2006 and I deserve it again in 2007.”
Sportslady of the Year Juliette Ah-Wan
“I always told myself that I should win the Sportslady of the Year
title a second time after my first triumph in 2000. The day has come
and I’m happy. I’m looking forward for a third win. I would also
like to thank the sport entourage for its support and guidance.”
Young Male Athlete of the Year Joel Dubel
“I’m happy to win the title as I didn’t expect victory tonight
(Friday night). My target for the 2008 season is to win a medal at
the forthcoming Jeux de la CJSOI in Seychelles.”
Young Female Athlete of the Year Meggy Gertrude
“I’m happy to win the Young Female Athlete of the Year title and I
was also hoping to win the Sportslady of the Year crown. I felt I
lost the prestigious title because I only competed in one
international competition – the All-Africa Games – in 2007. May I
take this opportunity to point out that the training environment for
sailing here isn’t good and we also do not have a coach.” |
