2008 TUC Day 3: England Wins, But It Was Nigeria’s Night
    BadZine International 13/05/2008

Nigeria’s head coach, Saujuma Falauchi, was pleased with his team’s performance in Jakarta. “The main difference between us and the Asia powerhouses is the lack of exposure and opportunities. We don’t get to travel to the various international tournaments like they do.
But I think having traveled to Jakarta for the Thomas Cup, the other nations have now seen our standard and now know what we are capable of if we have as much resources as they do.

The Thomas Cup championships will be combined again with the Uber Cup - the Women’s Team World Badminton Championship.

Brief History

Formerly known as 'The International Badminton Championship Challenge Cup', the silver-gilt trophy is usually referred to by its more familiar title of 'The Thomas Cup'.

The Thomas Cup competition in 1948 was BWF’s first major international tournament.
The trophy was donated by the first president of the world body, Sir George Thomas.

Next Uber Cup

China won that last two Uber Cups held in Jakarta in 2004 and Sendai/Tokyo in 2006. The next Women’s Team World Badminton Championship for the Uber Cup will be hosted in Jakarta, Indonesia 11 - 18 May 2008.

The Uber Cup championships will be combined again with the Thomas Cup – the Men’s Team World Badminton Championship.

Brief History

The idea of an international team competition for women along the lines of the Thomas Cup contest was first mooted early in 1950 when the BWF (then known as IBF) received the offer of a trophy from Mrs H S Uber.

Prompted by the enormous success of the men’s championships trophy for the Thomas Cup, there was strong interest in the idea and in 1953, the institution of the Championships was agreed upon in principle. Mrs. Uber's offer was gratefully accepted and regulations drawn up and approved for the event and it was agreed that the inaugural contest should take place over 1956-7
